Can anyone give me a bit of advice please. One of our horses has had quite a runny eye for the past few weeks, didnt really think any thing of it and just kept cleaning it up etc where it had dried on her skin. Mainly runs when out in field but today when we went to catch her we noticed her eye in side was quite red compared to the other (only noticed this when head was down grazing)
Any ideas of what it is and how to help it, doesnt bother her at all but bothering us now.
Thanks

If you have a good relationship with your vet, ring him/her up and discuss with them the problem. My vet would happily put me up a tube of eye cream, without seeing the pony, if I described the problem to them

We always use Brolene drops - from the chemists - on the advice of a vet!

brolene or golden eye, if swollen or sore, but if just runny i use optrex or similar and clean around the area, normally flies can irritate them, and just need cleaning, my mare gets sticky eyes so bathe them daily with optrex x

One of ours has this after a couple of days being bothered by flies - I've bathed his eyes in optrex & they have started to improve.

Maybe her tear ducts (i think thats how you spell it LOLx) are blocked my Shetland gets this I bathe with a teabag and use Brolene. But best getting professional vet advise she may have scratched the inner eye and caused infection. Good luck xxx

Bathe then use optrex of brolene. And always turn out with a fly hat thing on! If it doesnt improve, get the vet out.

eye drops from chemist. I also used tea bags soaked in water to sooth them - definately flys causing this!

Our Dartie is very prone to runny eyes in the summer (they can go from nothing when turned out in the morning to hugely swollen, red and streaming by evening). All we do is pour some previously boiled water into a cup and dissolve some salt in it. Then just wash the eye with the solution, morning and evening. Generally clears up within 48 hours. If very very bad, we clean the eye, then use Golden Eye from the chemist - never fails.

Same happened to me, I called him out straight away as eye proplems can develop very quickly, he had headbutted someone on the shoulder and made his eye very cloudy and weepy, vet gave him glow in the dark eye drops was so cool =) But he was on a course of eye cream and anti biotics/flamatory and was sorted in a couple of weeks. It could just be flys (so recomend mask) or hay fever again mask. If it gets worse keep him out of the wind (vets advice) and give him a call =) x

Mine started getting puffy runny itchy eyes a few years ago - just like hayfever. As long as he has his mask on now its not a problem

My Sec a mare has an eye that seems to run all the time. Its always done it ever since she was young apparently.I have a tub of golden eye though and it seems to do the trick. Her eye is watering less and less lately so im wondering if its actually getting better. It has never caused her a problem, i've always kept it clean and mask her in the summer to stop the flies getting at it. Word of warning though golden eye can stain your fingers so use gloves!

Agree on fly masks, our ponies always seem to run when flys are around. So just keep them away full stop now.
