£9 here!! it was £6.75 last year same as you!! its something to do with the recession, not alot of work for joiners means no shavings as is a bi product, so whoosh, up go prices!! we had trouble getting them last winter x

Yep all because of the recession, no building trade so no shavings - so that's another thing to blame the government for!!!!

This is why i finally made up my mind to put all mine on mats and pellets. Spent all day on saturday laying mats and putting in new wood pellet beds( the watering thing was slightly wierd) but now in i am thrilled. I have spent a fortune doing it but mats will pay for themselves in 6 months.
I for one will not pay these inflated prices for shavings this winter.

5.75 a bale near us (Warrington) for the cheapest ones, still bl**dy dear IMO seeing as all they do is pee and poo all over it then smush it around The mare is on straw but the gelding just eats straw until he looks fit to pop

I think ours are about £6.50 a bale, but it's a while since we bought bales. We now get ours free from a wood workshop.

I agree, get your rubber mats down. Source them on the net and get delivered, as tons cheaper than at shops. Then just use woodpellets or a mix of pellets and shavings. Should cut your bedding down by half.

I already have rubber mats down so I don't need to use much bedding- in theory! Leave it too skimpy and i find the ponies and rugs stink and are covered in poo stains. Is there anywhere in the NW that does the wood pellets in small quantities? I don't have storage space for a bulk supply.

Ours are £5.50. We're on straw though as i love a big deep bed but bought a bag for the trailer off the woman who owns our yard and that's how much they were. Still expensive but alot cheaper than most by the looks of it.

We pay £8.25 for Hunters, but they seem to be very absorbent, and all ours have mats down and as are out longer during the summer, get a clean 1/2 bale every week when I dig the wet out. Went onto the Nedz pro, then got talked into the nedz original, total waste of money, and the one I still have left on that is being weaned off it and the remaining bales will go in as lorry bedding. There also used to be loads of lorries carrying shavings coming through Dover, but over the last two years there are now not many at all, hence the shortage and price increase.

Here's a link for you www.bedding-for-horses.co.uk/ if a few of you get together and have a bulk delivery you could get it at a better price, or for the more entrepreneurial members why not have a lorry load bung a couple of quid a bale and sell a few as long as you don't get greedy people are more than willing to pay a bit extra.
