apart from a vet cutting away proud flesh, or the green smelly cream I used to use on it, what other things can you do to reduce it?

Manuka honey is very good and not too expensive. Get a jar that is as strong as possible (it's graded up to +30 I think) as the higher the rating, the more powerful it is. I used it successfully on a nasty kick that the vet thought would produce a really bad scar - there is a scar but it's not noticeable unless you know where to look.

yes just rub it over the proud bit, also alovera cream works a treat, if its still fresh then bi carbonate of soda (sp) this helps prevent scaring.
No doubt there will be loads of traditional ways to stop scaring and proud flesh

When one of mine get a cut that goes proud, i just wash everyday in hibiscrub or similar, then after washing, semi dry and cover in wound powder, leave until it has formed into a nice scab, then repeat, as every time you remove a scab, it takes the proud flesh back, it isn't rushed, and allows the surrounding area to heal neatly, it will just get smaller and smaller. Also once it has healed and if there is still a lump, hire a laser, they work a treat!! good luck! x

You can also buy Fucidin cream over the counter at a pharmacy I believe - my daughter uses it for her eczema, brill stuff.
Manuka honey is okay, but your meant to put a lob load on and then cover it and leave it for 4-days for it to work properly. It has to kind of culture. Have to say, used it on my leg for my after the infection and 'dig out' and it was useless.
If you could get some from your GP or Vet, then ideally some Trimivate Cream and Haelan Cream ... you use them alternatively for a week at a time, one week one, the next week the other and vice versa. Covering them all the time. Basically the Trimivate is an antibacterial that takes back the proud flesh and cleans the wound, then the Haelan pulls in the sides of the wound. That REALLY works well !!

im using synulox sryinges from the vet they are working a treat its a mild steroid and antibiotic in one , its actually the treatment for cows with mastitis but the vet told me to use it and preasure bandage over the top , its worked brillianly on my fillies leg and the proud flesh is very nearly gone shes only been having the treatment for 8 days after a huge wounde from a fight with a barbed wire fence on the front of her hock joint .
and it cant sting at all because pony is very happy for me to put it on and she was pretty hysterical about her leg when we first treated it and that was just with hibiscrub and aloe vera

I used it successfully on a nasty kick that the vet thought would produce a really bad scar - there is a scar but it's not noticeable unless you know where to look. before I posted this I did speak with guestless privately... to cut a long story short, manuka is excellent for healing, BUT... it can also promote excessive granulation as warned by our vets..after treating a horse with extensive injuries to both hind legs.. the manuka was stopped as the tissue was over granulating and a lot of proud flesh was appearing, the regime then changed to laser treatment and steroid cream and unfortunately copper sulphate to remove the proud flesh. I guess the thing is to use your head and assess day by day the progress of the wound. not trying to diss manuka as its excellent, this is just one experience of using it for large extensive wounds. Hope all goes well with you horse..
