we have used benzyl benzoate for the last 16 years and our little pony has had a full mane and tail ever since. when we first got his mane and tail were scratched raw and would bleed. just go careful with the little children as it does sting their eyes if they touch the ponies mane and then rub their faces. and agree with the others, a decent fly rug does the world of good and stabling dusk til dawn when really hot whether. hope this helps

Save money on lotions and potions, and buy a good sweetitch rug. (I use Boetts). Put them on early in the season (I put them on in march) and leave them on till the end of oct/nov depending on temperature. Prevention is better than cure!
As an extra plus, they help prevent dusty coats, and fading in the sun! Our black shettie has a lovely coat all year round.

Snuggy hods are brilliant. I sell them with a discount for HG members. We have also been putting Avon Dry Oil body spray on manes and tails as well. It keeps the midges away.pm if you want a quote for a sweet itch body rug.

we use boett rugs we find if you stick them on early in the year you really forget your pony has sweet itch . for the ocasional rubber we find electric fencing and a pour on solution are good . i love the boett rugs though i just bung them in the washing machine and tumble dry .
they dont rub manes either so if you need to plait there a god send .

I have a mare who suffers from very bad sweetitch. I use a good cover all fly rug between feb and nov each year. I apply Benzyl Benzoate on all affected areas (mane, tail, quarters, under belly, etc) before she has scratched it and broken the skin. Don't apply it on broken skin and wear rubber gloves to apply. I use a fly spray made of citronella, vinegar, garlic and a touch of washing up liquid. Sudocrem works wonders on open sores and broken skin, and aqueous cream applied where she has rubbed helps to soften the skin and stop it getting itchy and also stops the midges biting. I also put garlic in her feed.

we have a pony who lives in his boett from around feb-oct. unfortunately he made a little hole in the withers a few weeks ago which turned into a huge one overnight as the midges must have found a way in, he now hasnt got a boett as such as he totally trashed it and the owner cannot at the moment afford to replace it, so the mane has nearly gone, the tail looks like a loofa brush and he's rubbed his shoulders till they bleed. Its a terrible problem and a total shame, so if anyone knows who may have a second hand boett for sale to fit a 13hh, please get in touch.

Snuggy hoods body and hood are the best, my pony has one and she has finally got a main and tail, i really do recommend these. and if they are looked after they will last ages. Every so often we wash the rug to keep it clean :-)

Snuggy hoods body and hood, and stabling over dawn and dusk to prevent them from being bitten at all.
Another thought for those with itching shoulders and bellies - are you sure it's midge bites they are allergic to? Many other things can cause them to itch.
