Daughters pony wasnt right weds eve when she did riding club dressage. He looked like his nearside off hind leg wasnt attached at the pelvis and was all wobbly, he also broke out in a real bad sweat. Called the vet out as an emergency told him I thought the ponys pelvis was out. I breathed a sigh of relief when the partner of the vets practice turned up and not one of the juniors. He checked pony over well and was really thorough. He also took a blood test as he said there were a lot of horses 'tying up' in the heat. He said he couldnt see what the problem was but gave me some bute for a week and gave pony an injection. Was told to leave him in stable until the results of the blood test came back but that daughter could ride him in straight lines. Got blood results late thurs eve, they were fine. I asked him if he thought it was a good idea to get my chiropractor out to see pony. He said it wouldnt hurt so managed to get her friday afternoon to see pony. Well he had a rotated and dropped pelvis on the offside!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! If I hadnt have got her out we could have perhaps done a lot of damage if daughter would have got on the pony. Needless to say I am going to take great pleasure in letting said vet know at 9am tomorrow morning what the chiropractor found!!!!

my friends vet missed the fact that her pony had actually broken his leg! they got x rays done by a different vet and showed the leg was badly bust!

Donkeydo, WELL DONE in getting a second opinion. Many members of the veterinary profession (not all, I hasten to add) are still very circumspect about the use and the ability of the chiropractor.
Eventually, my GP (s) over the years have had to concede, but they are simply a source of analgesics to me!
Take your pony steady and good luck!

My chiro is fab. expensive but worth it, Char got his leg stuck in his strap of his rug as a 3 y o and went tearing round field withit in on 3 legs, though not lame, when she came she explained he had, to compensate for the hurting, locked up the muscles around it, when she manipulated him we saw a drastic dip appear in the back end when the muscles were relaxed, then we built this back up with raised poles and excersises, and he was fine in 6 weeks.

It was horrible!!! I knew he wasn't quite right and while doing my test (luckily was only walk & trot test) he felt like he was struggling but the arena felt quite deep so thought it could have been that. After test I trotted round a couple of times and then walked him off which was when he really said he couldn't do anymore, he was really sweaty but couldn't even walk to cool him off so I got mum to walk him away from me and his leg looked like it was dangling and buckling underneath him as he walked - of course I am rubbish in a crisis so burst into tears! Bless his heart for trying his best when he was in pain, I felt awful but he's feeling his normal self again!

Sadly, what MOST vets know about skelatel problems, it very little. You did exactly the right thing getting your chiro. They can often fix things, that vets wouldnt even notice!
My mare I just bought, had a terrible canter when I tried her. The seller just said she was weak and needed to build up strength. She passed a 5 stage vetting, with not a single fault found.
I knew this wasnt the case, but bought her anyway and took her straight off to my spinal expert (who is actually a VET who specializes in the skelton). He sorted her out, in 5 places and she is now cantering perfectly well.

i had a similar situation where an old pony was diagnosed by the vet as having a urinary infection. didnt agree, next vet out - snapped pelvis pushing down on bladder!

Can't praise my chiropractor enough she is fab! Phoned said vet today and told him what she had found. He totally poo poo'd the findings. Saying he must have done it between weds (when he saw him) and friday when chiro came. What a load of b******s!! And I told him so!! I'm a nurse, I don't always trust my doctors opinion so I'm certainly not always going to accept my vets opinion when its my babys involved!!!

My coloured mare had chiro last week, just a routine tweek as been a mummy for a number of years and while nothing majorly wrong at all, jumped her on lunge tonight and she flying !!!!! Some people tell me they are just an expensive waste of time, but when we are riding our horses we owe it to look after their skeleton, i am not a feather weight, nor and i well off ( we on lidl meals till end of month to OH`s disgust !!!!! ) keeps me happy knowing their backs are happy

our chiro is great to- often they just catch things that people as vet's can miss, and it's all down to what they see on an everyday basis

One of my other old ponies used to canter like a cow and we tried everything for her, I was told by quite a few professionals, including a chiro (not current one) that she was just being 'awkward' took her to another vet who noticed with just one trot up that she had an old factured pelvis which hadn't healed properly when she was younger!!!

We have an amazing oesteopath who picks us everything. Had a pony slightly lame for a bit and had two other back people out one of whom made it worse! and the other had a poke and said she had "fixed" it. The oestoepath came out and said his back was fine he had tweeked a tendon!

This is really what's ideal - a vet who recognises a "physio" problem, and a physio who will recognise a "vet" problem!

Had bill today and the vets have only charged me for the blood test! Haven't been charged for emergency callout and consultation. Well I never. My faith in vets has been restored.

That is terrible! What is the outlook for your pony ? Never to be ridden again , Thankfully she has gone on to be a wonderful brood mare, her colt foal is about 6weeks old now!

Ponymum, I asked as thats the same injury as my dressage horse "Violet" had. They removed a big chip from the fetlock, but said they doubted she would be any good under saddle again. Sadly after 18 months of trying to keep her sound, she is now joining the ranks of the brood mares!
She is not being very good at it at the moment, as we started a bit late in the year, so fighting against the weather and getting used to what makes her cycle properly. We are going to start trying again in the spring.
We are lucky with the mares that they can at least live a happy life with a "job" to do, other than under saddle. Would be terrible to have to PTS !!

Yes, its a bonus if you have a mare that sustains that type of injury...Before I had my daughter, I never bought geldings, for that reason..... And now as my daughter is getting a bit more capable, the mares are starting to resurface again! 3 of each at the mo!!!!
