i have just been on the real time imaging website looking at the royal show pictures and cannot believe how overweight one of the ponies is. its a lovely pony but way to much weight on it.
why do people have to fatten them up so much??? im surprised they can get round the ring.
i know people have commented alot on this subject before but i was just really shocked by the photos

I have just bought a new mare and am concerned that she is pencil thin. I dont like my horses fat, but I like them to be nicely covered, in a fit kind of way (dressage horses).
I took her to a show on Sunday (for experience for her) and she was unplaced. She was the most striking/beautiful horse in the class, so I am guessing that her lack of weight put her at a disadvantage. The placed horses were all rather fat and certainly wouldnt be considered fit.
I saw the vet today, who told me that my mare is abosultely perfect weight for her build and not to even consider fattening her up........

I have a section A which I know is slightly overweight. Ive been struggling all summer to get weight off him. He has a small handful of Hi Fi Lite and a low calorie balancer, very limited grazing and a small amount of poor haylage. He is worked virtually every day and will not lose weight. He also carries a lot of muscle. Some ponies are just like this with owners stuggling to get weight off them. Im sure there are a lot of owners like me who are trying their hardest to get the weight off but for some it doesnt come easy at this time of year!! Please dont anyone think I am condoning these fat ponies I just sympathise with how hard it is to get some to lose weight!

I think that as well as penalising overweight ponies some of the riders on the circuit need to think about losing a few pounds too!!! There are a couple of people that compete in the same classes as me and it is not a pretty site seeing a jacket bursting at the seems and a big bum wobbling over the sides of the saddles!!!!!! I am not a skinny mini but would not dare squeeze into a pair of jods or jacket 3 sizes too small for me!

It is true though isn't it!!! I was mortified when I'd had a few months out of showing and then put my jacket on (was in maids size til I was 20) and realised it was too small for me, immediately went on a diet!

Your not exactly big though anyway apple123!!!! It is awful though to see though rather large riders blobbing around on their horses, def spoils the picture (and poor horse!) dont know what is worse, an over weight horse with an average rider or an average horse with an overweight rider??!!

That was when I had Libby and did my first Hack class a couple of years ago, was a bit chunky then. My 'adult' jacket fits nicely but the minute I can see any fat I get really self conscious (stupidly because there are many other riders who are on the bigger side).
I would say overweight rider on average horse

A non horsey boyfriend of my rider was at the ringside and watched the first ridden class come in complete with rolls of fat liberally displayed on several ponies. Is this the fatstock class, he innocently asked!!

What a ridiculous statement! So Jamie Gray was perfectly entitled to keep his horses how he chose then, because he owned them? Horses shouldn't be excessively fat it causes them just as many problems as being underweight, and everyone who owns an equine has a responsibility to keep it in good health.
