i think giving steroids to horses to make them look fatter/bigger in the show ring is ridiculous. i know someone who does this. The horse could have about 3 injections A day. i cant believe how serious this showing world has gone, for god sake i was in a show the other day and this poor boys mother was screaming at the boy cause his hands were in the wrong position.... all these people want to do is to have FUN, why do people have to be SO serious

My pony has probably 2 weekly courses of steriods for his skin during peak season, not injections but in tablet form, thinki its barbaric to be used for anything other than medical purposes !

i have seen it all, the damage that can be done in later life by using steroids to fatten up is awful, a pony who once went to hoys as a 4 year old had to be pts at the age of 12 because of this, such a lovely pony who would have got to hoys anyway, to some people though they are not animals, they are "show animals" and more can be bred or bought as far as they are concerned, it is a sad fact.

Crikey didnt know this was done with horses, very shocked to be honest. I know they do it with cattle etc but never knew about horses - its true you learn something new every day ( even if is something horrible).

Are these people really horse lovers? Obviously winning means more than the horses health, hope it does show up on dope testing and they get banned from showing! I would rather have a healthy natural pony and lose, than do this to such a wonderful animal.

EJ the type of steroids you are talking about (to relieve allergic conditons) is totally different to the steriods discussed here - anabolic steriods - the same as used by bodybuilders. It it widely known to cause infertility in stallions and can also lead to behavoural problems too. Based on testosterone. There are a few stallions on the show circuit that oddly appear to have no stock on the ground what so ever.....

I have been told these anabolic steroids also help the ponies to keep a really good summer coat so when you go to HOYS and you see a very well rounded 4 year old (looking mature beyond its years) and in full summer coat when most people are either struggling with the coats or resorted to clipping them, you do think the worse. Once the steroids are stopped some of these ponies deflate like a pricked balloon. Also steroids can make ponies much more susceptible to laminities.

This article is interesting--mentions that if testing is for anabolic steroids it will not pick up Corticosteroids or vice vera www.thehorse.com/ViewArticle.aspx?ID=11789You may have to register to read but free.

Actually, I think you have brought up an important subject - we all know it goes on & I've certainly been in the ring with a 'normal' yearling against yearlings that look like 4 year olds. No one seems interested & whilst there do seem to be less grossly obese ponies / horses around this year, it is very disheartening for those of us who like to let our animals mature as nature intended.

Unfortunately we have no control over the ads that appear across the top of the page, they are google ads and just pick up on key words in the threads in an effort to show ads that are relevant.
I'm interested to know what upset natalie has caused though, as I certainly haven't received any complaints?

I thought the whole idea was to now have much slimmer horses and ponies and that the fat and bulked out ones would be put down. Can't say that I have seen this applied to the cobs though!

xxnataliexxguest,I think you have brought up a subject that possibly needs looking in to,that is, if it goes on.This must truly be a health issue to the horses ,and poniies left open to this abuse. We have MM's, and have the problem of trying to keep weight off,our sec A lives on fresh air.
