Any advice on how to stop this?- young horse being worked in a loose ring snaffle, teeth checked, has quite a fleshy tongue. Working well, coming into an outline but the picture is spoilt by the Colgate challenge! Any ideas/ experience of this?

Does it happen on the lunge as well?

haha Yes I used to have a section B with a small mouth and a fleshy tongue. He used to smile all the time, Your sounds like he is tense/resisting the bit. I would try somthing tasty so he mouths his bit and enjoys it being in his mouth, If he is young this could just be because he finds it strange!

Thanks Joise, I'll try that too.
How did judges feel about him smiling at them?

totally recommend myler bits had same sort of thing with sec a. has no room in his mouth at all if you lift his lip his teeth didnt touch and couldnt due to the bit. The final straw was the judge asking if he was a head shaker!! i replied no just having bitting problems.
He doesnt like thin bradoons and went to pc last week, he came home with bruises across his tongue i was mortified! so hired a myler and he is so different even has res champion mon!! even his movement has improved as he is so relaxed.
It took months of researching and trial and error but i think he is happy now!

one of mine smilies all the time what ever bit he wears, he is not resisting the bit at all and is always happy, just seems to be part of his character, never had any problems with showing him either.

All I want is an MB02 loose ring snaffle & can't get one small enough - I have asked them and they won't make me one either!

As pony does this to a lesser extent on the lunge, I personally would have a instructor ride him (whilst also finding a bit to suit his mouth conformation) to see if the issue is a riding one. Some do this when they are not truly going forward into the bridle.
Go for an instructor who is known to you and not one who immediately puts on a nice tight flash.

My boy is very fussy about what bit and he is finally happy in an eggbutt mullen mouth snaffle I had him a loose ring french link and he would constantly resist contact and throw his head just because there was too much movement. He also has a very fleshy tongue being a highland, but this suits him very well
