We have recently bought a three year old Connemara who we are planning on backing after Christmas as we are not sure of his exact age. We are planning to start long reigning so need to bit him first : could I ask for advice on the correct way to go about this as I would hate to set him back by my inexperience. What sort of bit is best to use? Is it better to use a bridle rather than a headcollar? Are there any tips on how to get pony to accept the bit? Thanking you all in advance.

I bought one of those breaking bits a few years ago with the little keys in the middle and left it on the horse in the stable for half an hour at a time while I was around. It is quite a lot of metal in the mouth, but does encourage them to salivate and 'soften' the mouth. I still use it now!

We also use a bitting bit with keys as it gives them a "softer" mouth. Start will just a few minutes at a time and build it up gradually. We also lunge and long rein in one sometimes. Normally use a bridle, but if we have them tied on the yard or similar then we have these funny clip things to attach the bit to the head collar (and tie up on the headcollar!). You are basically aiming for them to be playing and mouthing on the bit and generally when they dont mouth on it anymore when you put the bit in then they can be swapped into a normal bit good luck

i use one of these. I have also just put one in my 21 year old as he had really hardened in his mouth and after only 10 minutes him just wearing it doing nothing he had mouthed alot on it.

well first thing i would recomend is to have the ponies mouth checked and any wolf teeth removed and and sharp edges filed down then when you know he is comfortable we start with a nylon bit normaly with the yearlings but if the pony is older and going to be ridden i would start to bit him with a bit suitable for riding later on we tend to use happy mouth bits for mouthing and breaking they dont get cold or hot and being apple flavoured we find most seam to take to them very well . we start by using just a head piece ontop of a head collar and leave it in whilst we groom them after about a week we get them used to a roller and then we get them used to a little contact by either using a loose bungee or loose side reins we then lead them out in hand with side reins but lead them from the head collar
