Yes its very common and also very contagious!!! So need to keep infected dogs away from others. Best treatment for the cough is Benylin - the human variety!!! this has always worked with my Boxers and is what most folk give their dogs, in fact my vet advised me to give it!!!!

My vet prescribed antibiotics, and Benylin, and strict rest,as hoolling about, when they feel a bit better, can cause heart problems. I has 5 dogs with it all at once and 2 were puppies, it was a nightmare and very upsetting to see them coughing, its a horrible thing.

There are 2 infections I believe. One is an upper respiratory cough and the other is lower respiratory. This is the most dangerous one as it goes into the lungs and can cause pneumonia. I would check it with your vet as the lower respiratory needs anti biotics. With the upper just ease the discomfort with a little Benylyn.

Happy to help

I have had a few with it over the years, usually lasts a couple of weeks and is relived by benylyn. You need to be careful regards secondary infection such as pneumonia, but in a otherwise healthy dog it shouldn't cause to much of a problem.. They sound a lot worse than they are normally,,, its a horrid hacking coungh..Tehy do say, if they have had it once, its unlikely to re occur.
Just keep an eye on deterioration of your dogs condition.
