I have a 5yr old 13.2 welsh cob who works beautifully in a single jointed hanging cheek snaffle when doing a dressage test or schooling at home but put him in a show ring he gets excited on the go round and gets very strong but it just about controlable. He has just recently started doing working hunter and he gets silly when jumping, pulling towards the jump resulting in little control, in turn causing us to get bad lines towards the next jump and getting faults. I did put him in a pelham for jumping and the results were much better he was lovely and steady and always goes clear but I have found we get marked down in the showing phase of the class for it and have had a few judges tell me to used a snaffle and martingale so is there any snaffle I can use that will give us the control the pelham gives me so I don't get marked down, or is it just persaverance with the snaffle I have and hope he will get better?

You are ok to use a pelham in WH classes.

Check the rules regarding bits in a WH class, if it states any suitable bit you shouldn't be marked down for using a pelham

I have to admit I always thought I was ok using a pelham but a few judges have said older traditional judges mark down. Might just go back to the pelham. Thanks
