Hi, I was wondering if I should compete my 133 show hunter in veterans next year. He has been to rihs and hoys in the past and is still in lovely condition, but ... he has gone a bit grey with his old age. I was wondering if he would be marked down because of this? He is a bit grey around the eyes and looks slightly roan across his hind quarters (Note judges still ask my daughter how old the pony is and are surprised when they hear he is a veteran, they think his colour is natural lol, but it never used to be there!)
Any advice appreciated, thanks
P.S. he is a chestnut

no you wouldnt get marked down for that kind of thing. pony just needs to be home produced, sound and then is marked on turnout and ridden seperately. if you look on the chs showing website there rulebook is on there with how the marking works.

you go for it and good luck, nice to know there are people out there that look after the golden oldies, a few grey hairs wont matter at all, however you called always colour them ,lets face it most ponies have make up on in the ring.

can i just say veteran, i hope the ponies i breed go on to find owners like you. Its nice to hear of a pony in a lovely permanent home. Theres so many people that sell on ponies when they've finished with them even if those ponies owe their owners nothing and are getting a bit long in the tooth. Dont get me wrong, i realise people often need to sell to get the next size up, but its sad to read adverts for say 18 yr olds that have been in the same home for 8 years or so or been at the top of their game maybe 10 years ago. I hope you have a great time with him in Veterans and who knows maybe you'll get him to Olympia next year!

I am on the VHS judges panel and i can confirmed to you that grey hairs on a chestnut because of age will not make a jot of difference to the judges, please dont use make up show your pony as it is, be proud of the pony dont mask things, this is the beauty of VHS showing, lumps, bumps, scars and colour change are all part of your horse becoming a veteran. Good luck and enjoy the world of veterans.
