Police searching for convicted horse thief
Amy Mathieson, H&H news writer
16 September, 2009
Police in Sussex are searching for a convicted horse thief who has been missing for nearly a month.
Tony Thackaberry, 44, from Surrey, was found guilty of stealing five horses and a horsebox in his absence after he failed to appear at Hove Crown Court on 21 August.
Mr Thackaberry stole the horsebox along with three horses and two three-month-old foals from a farm in Cowfold, Sussex, last year.
On 31 July 2008 Mr Thackaberry (pictured right) broke into the farm, loaded the horses into the box and drove the animals away.
The horsebox was later found alight near Edenbridge, but the horses have not been found.
During the incident two German shepherd dogs were severely beaten, but Mr Thackaberry has not been charged in relation to the attack.
Mr Thackaberry can not be traced and police are urging anyone with information to come forward. The force believe he could be in the Surrey or East Grinstead areas.
PC Natalie Davies said: "It's very important that Mr Thackaberry is found so that he can be sentenced for the offences for which he has been convicted. The value of the property and the animals stolen that night runs into tens of thousands of pounds and the crime was obviously a distressing one for the victim.
"Sadly the same farm was targeted again in December 2008. This time one of the dogs was attacked so severely that it died as a result of its injuries. No-one has been brought to justice for this offence and I appeal to anyone with any information to come forward."
Anyone with information is urged to contact the police on 0845 6070999 or Crimestoppers on 0800 555 111.

this is just awful and know how the people feel 7 yrs ago I had 3 ponies stollen from me in broad day light they parked the lorry on the grass verge in rush hour traffic and took them straight out of the field a police car drove right past them in the process. We knew who took them but the police were more interested in getting them for drug crime rather than horse crime even though I still had the passports police said it was a civil matter as the guy told them he had paid us cash and his best mate and wife were his wittnesses. I hope they catch them.

He does look like a nasty piece of stuff, wouldn't want him in the same county as my horses. If you do see him though, best to report to Police and not say or do anything, he really looks and sounds evil.

Suppose the police and courts will give him a cup of tea and tell him not to do it again.

Suppose the police and courts will give him a cup of tea and tell him not to do it again. To clarify, the police do not pass sentence and are frustrated when they managed to bring an offender to court whereby very little happens or they are released early. Further, the courts are restricted by what sentence they can pass by the Home Secretary but I feel the sentences they choose to pass are often inadequate- nothing to do with Mr Plod who is actually out to catch the bad guy.

Actually he was caught, sentenced and will be spending a few years locked up at Her Majestys Service! Tats...could I please ask how you know this? Was it published anywhere? Thanks. OB I know PC Davies. I have googled and have been unable to find anything about him being caught but i am certain that PC Davies said he had been caught and had been locked up for 2 years.

Ok i was a little bit wrong! He was caught in Sweden smuggling drugs and is locked up there. WPC Davies is organising a european arrest warrent to get him back over here when he has served time there. 'Official line: Is not yet sentenced, awaiting extradition'
I dont think it is ever a good idea to stop being on the lookout for horse thieves not matter who is or isnt locked up.

Yes you can ask. She is based in West Sussex, Henfield is in her 'patch'. I'm not sure why you feel the need to keep asking tho?
I appreciate why you're worried and why you want to be sure and you don't have to believe what i said, its no skin off my nose, i was trying to be helpful, i have said i was slightly wrong and i have told you what PC Davies has said to me after your request of asking.
Everyone can make your own conclusions now, keep your eyes open and lets hope this man doesnt have any friends in our area.

I'm not sure why you feel the need to keep asking tho? Because you could be anybody and therefore OB is understandably cautious about incorrect information being passed around, particularly if it is courtesy of HG. Thank you for replying to the questions asked.

I understand that, and you're right i could be anybody. I dont know any of you from Tom, willy or Harry either. As far as i am concerned now i have told you what i know, which is information you didnt previously have and it has come from the officer directly involved with the case, use the information how you want or don't want.
PC Davies is quoted in the article about Tony Thackaberry, so it would stand to reason the Henfield area is where she is based.
