My daughter is a member of this forum and is out at moment so I am posting as a guest, as I would like some of your valued opinions. Got an 8 year old show pony of good quality, been to hoys sfas and royal international. Dearly loved by us had for four years. Daughter now outgrown, sold him subject to vetting to a lovely lady, and he failed flexion test. I decided to have him xrayed on insurance, nothing showing, then went for MRI scans, where it has shown that he has very early stages of navicular. We are devastated, of course. Vet said with the correct shoeing and some medication he would come right (he is not lame at all to ride though). If daughter had not outgrown him, we would of course just have kept him for another season and see how he went. Would this put you off buying him at a low price or loaning him. Now sort of regret having MRI scan as if I did not know, would maybe have been able to sell him on with a clear conscience. I am not the sort not to tell a potential buyer. Thinking of finding somewhere to retire him to now, although he is beautiful and only 8

Do you need to sell him to fund a replacement? I feel the ideal solution would be for you to keep him and find a new little jockey to ride him, as you obviously love him to bits and that way you could ensure he gets the care and attention he needs. But obviously real life's not always that simple and it may not be possible financially to do this AND buy something bigger for your daughter. But then again if you are in a position where you have to sell, it would obviously affect the asking price.

i know navicular is bad, but it certainly is more manageble now than what it was a long time ago, i know someone who has 2 horses with it, and after corrective shoeing etc, she can still be the happy hacker she always wanted to be. i dont know how they would cope with jumping etc tho. Have you had a good discussion with his vet, and got a good idea what the future might hold for him? if you love him as much as it sounds like you do, you may be better placing him on loan, or selling him with the condition that he comes back to you should he ever become lame etc. I'm sure a pony of that quality and that young age will find another family to love him, in spite of the navi. and at least if you loan him you should be able to make sure he's ok for the rest of his life. i hope eveything works out for you and your pony, and good on you for getting to the bottom of his problem. i know its a pain that you do know what the problem is as you sound like you have all intents of being honest, which could leave you out of pocket, but at least you will be able to do right by the pony. good luck (and we wont tell your daughter you've been surfing the net when she comes home )

:)Thanks for your replies. Have sort of come to the conclusion that he will not bring me any money back, but unfortunately not in a position to keep two ponies as on a livery yard. The only way to fund a new pony is to to go ponyless over the winter to save up for new one, as paid a fair whack for original pony and that is obviously now all gone. Hey and thanks for not splitting on me that I am on HG, my daughter would probably be embarrassed

dont write him off, someone may still be happy to take him on, especially someone who probably couldnt have paid what he would have been worth without the navicular, its not the end of his life, I had a TB with Navicular and he still did everything except jumping and lived a very happy life and was still out there winning at 19yrs in showing classes.
