Hi, when kids riding at home we never canter our young pony with other ponies when riding as a group , he is only cantered on his own in the hope that when doing a FR he will realise cantering is not allowed on the go round. However, is this the wrong way of doing it - should we let him have a canter with others so this is nothing new or exciting he only has young rider for the ring so dont want to cause problems for either of them ;D

i always canter my ponies in all situations in a school to start with so no racing etc and start to circle around in ie behind etc not to much pressure and build up, i can even let my little girl school in with the yearlings loose and it doesnt bother our 5 yr old pony at all if they hoolie behind him.

OK - so instead of thinking it is a forbidden thing we might be better letting him do it and get comfortable with it

Our kids and ponies canter together at home and at pony club, even though they all do FR classes. Stood them in good stead a month or two ago when they were asked for group canter in a FR class Yes it was a local show, but even then the judge should have known better with a 5yo in the class! Still, ponies handled it very well as they're used to it - it was the kids who were confused, as they know they don't do group canter in FR classes!!!

totally agree, my daughter was just coming off the lead at home and could canter about 4 - 5 strides, she had watched her brother for years to knew the show inside out, so we went local and then said canter on, she was not impressed but still cantered with me quaking by the ring , she now canters at home with the others and the pony has learnt to listen to her typical girl !! do whats best for child and you will know whats safe and whats not, my too children ride and canter and follow and have races they have made it fun
