we have a 32 yr old grey mare who had a similar problem last year ... turned out to be a bacterial infection, not sure how it started but we think it may have originated from a small amount of rainscald ... it cleared up as soon as she had a course of anti-biotics .. we now feed her aloe vera juice to help boost her immune system and it has not reocurred but it was horrible to see her so itchy ...

could be an allergy,to something shes been in contact with, your vet and blood tests should be able to tell, may need a course of anti histamines

oooh I hope you get the vet for her soon, she must be so distressed to be itching like that. Would be interested in the result as not come across it before.

To be honest, I would not use anything until you have a definite diagnosis as if it is an allergy and the skin is sensitive you could make it worse. I do sympathise as I got erticaria as I was allergic to a certain antibiotic. I thought I was going to go crazy and it took the word 'itch' to an entirely different dimension.

My little A was very similiar. I have found he is just a very warm pony, so I have to be careful with what weight of rugs I have on him. I fully clip him, as he is too a veteran but in full work. I also hot rag him often, with a capful of dettol in a hot water and keep his rugs as clean as I can. We also changed his feed and I give him a supplement to boost his immune system being an old guy, maybe this has helped too. Hope she is ok.

Oh dear it's bad enough us being itchy , like others have said best to get a few blood tests done otherwise could make things worse, out of interest does she have Garlic in any form in her feed, the reason I say this is because Garlic can make some incredibly itchy, did my Arab lad and he is so much better now off the Garlic, good luck ;D

Any news on your itchy mare? reason I ask is that our 2 year old welsh filly does exactly the same. Now the weather is cooler she is not itching so much, so did wonder if it was because she was overheating. Did the results of blood tests show anything up?

My old pony had exactly the same - liver failure, itching, scouring, he was put onto a high dose of steroids which improved his appetite & saw him through last winter to July.

Oh I am sorry, what a shock, from itching! However the liver can rejuvinate can't it. I did have a pony with that problme (liver) but it was secondary to something else. Very bland diet and my vet said Milk Thistle. What is the prognosis, hopefully good and it has been caught in time.

In humans the itching is a symptom of a tumour - the only way to confirm it would be a biopsy but my pony was too ill to cope with the operation so it was a case of making him as comfortable as possible.
