i've seen a few of this cross beginning done on different forums, i've also seen a few for sale. what is the point in this cross, is it to get a section C. if it why not just breed C to C.

People cross them for many different reasons. I bought a A X D foal at the cob sales last year and have to admit was a little put off by it but so glad I took the chance. They seem to becoming more popular. Here is a picture of my boy He is by Hermas Golden Lloyd and out of Ala Triw a section A mare, He has alot of bone and depth like a D My friend also bought a section D mare x Seection A stallion and he has turned out lovely!

i would never put a section d stallion to an a mare due to the size of the foal but i will happily put an a stallion to a d mare to ad that prettiness.

I always thought that's how the C originated anyway?

Pretty much, there always was a complete range of height before the breed society and stud book which correspond to today's sections A, C and D. After WWII there were very few Cs left so many lines were introduced by breeding A x D, including the great Lyn Cwmcoed and Nebo Bouncer. Menai Fury was by and A stallion but out of a C-sized mare who I think without checking was by a D stallion. Now that there is a far bigger pool of C-bred Cs there isn't the same need to cross sections on numbers grounds, but no reason at all why it shouldn't be done.

i would never use a larger stallion on a smaller mare as i have seen to many difficult births with same size parents but the other way rond they do make nice wellbuilt ponies

I didnt think you could use two of them, like an A and a D because then it wouldnt be a pure welsh cob, or a pure welsh A. I love learning about these breeding things .

They did briefly stop the B x C/D cross, but it was so unpopular that the reinstated it again.
