I went to see a pony today whose pedigree i had researched before i arrived.
Both parents were grey, and 3 of the 4 grandparents were grey, one was a dappled palomino.
I expected to be looking at a grey but saw a chestnut with 4 white socks!!
Just got me thinking....did the chesnut gene come from the palomino? Or is something amiss here? I dont really understand genetics at all but would love to know more.......
I know some of you clever HG people will be able to explain this to me in laymens terms

Chestnut is recessive which means that it can be carried by any colour that means all the greys can carry the chestnut gene. Grey is dominant so if the grey gene is present it will come out in the coat colour. Palomino is basically a chestnut with the dilute gene so in a nutshell all the parents & grandparents will carry the chestnut gene so it is quite legitimate that the pony could be chestnut. It should be noted that even though it is from grey parents the pony will not carry any other colour therefore if you want it for breeding any prospective foals will take their colour from the other parent.
