I read that alot of top horses have a vice, I don't care that much as long as the horse performs, although I hate the noise when a horse windsucks makes me feel abit ill...

my pony doesn't have any vices atall... but i think the worst vice is either a horse that weaves constantly or windsucking.

My lecturer wrote the article on the similarities between drug addicts and cribbers. The cribbing stimulates amoung other areas the neucleus accumbens (pleasure centre ) of the brain, Heroin and cocaine have similar effects on people .
Youtube has an interesting video Brain mechanisms pleasure and reward which explains it well.
I am about to start my dissertation using horses at potters to do behavioural tests blink rate etc and comapre this to their Nucleus accumbens size etc fascinating stuff!!

My old broodmare box walks, drives me crazy. One of her front feet turns inwards as a result. She doesnt like change so she HAS to have a routine otherwise all hell breaks loose, oh and she only goes one way.

Not trying to get at anyone but a genuine enquiry - if you have a box walker, why not keep it out?

One of the brood mares on our yard is a box walker and a wind sucker!
She used to be a very successful WHP in a past life but an accident put an end to that.
As all the brood mares live out the box walking isn't an issue but the wind sucking damages fence posts left right and centre!
She has beautiful foals and is a good mum though so we put up with it!

Ill say it,ive got a d mare that is a bugger to catch.I have a trick tho.if she dosnt come in ill go get the other d mare. When she realised that id bring the other one in and ride and leave her having a sulk shes now first on the gate when called.
Thats my major vice tho.but weaving not good for the legs and wink sucking is bad for the stomach etc so its hard whichever one

i had a door kicker she would start about 6 on a morning even on a weekend, her door was fitted with carpet and big brush heads, but she would still manage to wake you up!

after having so many problems with yard owners we would never buy another windsucker. He pulls all the fence posts out and the YO's dont want him on there yard, which is understandable. Hes 18.1HH and pulls the posts straight out the ground, has let horses and sheep out on numerous occasions....hes always still in the field though And because the fence follows a public walkway it cant be electrified or criboxed . Hes a total star of a horse though

I don't like vices or bad manners of any description, would not buy a pony with any and would be horrified and feel very guilty if one of mine developed them.
Most serious though are ridden vices which are dangerous, rearing, bolting etc. I would not keep a horse that did that though I would not sell it as a ridden horse either.

Have to agree that really bad nappers who rear would probably be my worst nightmare. Daughter rode one once and have to say someone eminently sensible in the horse world said 'you can always buy another horse but not another child' and I think she was right!

AWkward little darlings that will stand at the gate until you approach to bring in, and casually walk off round and round in circles what ever the weather, and whatever the time!! Im not too fond of weavers either thedamage the do to their front legs(tendons) a bit of a worry,

Also horses that get chlostrophobic in the lorry, jogging in transit, is maddening, had an stallion that kicked side out off lorry regularly, but was very successful showjumper in italy, those arden lorries werent tough enough!!
