Well I don't want too go off topic. I have a pony that Cribs, but it really doen't bother me. A horse/pony with no manners that bites and kicks annoys me more! xxx

I'm with you Elliebee. We have a cribber and he is the nicest horse you could wish to meet. He can't help it and I don't suppose he likes it, it's like someone biting their nails, they'd rather not but it's not life-threatening!

I'd rather a cribber or a windsucker than a weaver. One on our yard used to stand behind the anti weave bars and weave herself to a standstill.

In the H&H they compared cribbing to cocaine users! Aparently it's they same feeling and rush that cocaine would give a person. Mine too is the nicest pony xxx

We have had one mare who weaves in the stable, for over 6 years now - has never worried us - she only weaves when she can see us! We have another ex racing trotter who only weaves over the gate to come back in!! Always said we would never think twice about buying another. No have one who weaves so frantically that it is awul to watch - there are definately 'degrees' of weaving - he'd take your head off if you were in the way, whereas the mare weaves around you (or rather over the top of you). I'd still rather have this than windsucking - yuk!

Door bangers and weavers, we have a crib biter such a swetheart and doesnt do it much, she was 3 weeks old when she started 12 now and never affected her. The little s**s that wont be caught - dont know if you would call that a vice though?

I've had every type of vice and when Charlie goes windsucking the kid's always say "There he goes having a f*g",he so reminds me of my Nanna. Back to the point,I hate not being able to catch my D mare and I've had her 12yrs or so.........

Love that ffynnoncadno, so appropriate! I think when H&H were talking about cocaine they were just trying to explain what goes on in the horse's brain, not really trying to equate it with a human addicted to illegal drugs! More like a nail biter or cigarette smoker really.

I think the worst vice is any vice that becomes a problem to you or affects your horses health, me personally will put up with most of the normal vices one associates as being vices, but will not tolerate bargie bad mannered horses or ponies in or out the stable, my biggest pet hate is seeing stallions behind bars.

None of my boys are behind bars and they have access to scratch each other and chat.....sometimes a bit high pitched

I had a horse that weaved VERY badly. I couldnt cope with it, as it made me miserable, thinking how unhappy he must be.
Also had to muckout a horse, when I was working with horses, that attacked everyone and anyone entering his stable! He nearly bit my finger right off! Apparently he was LOVELY to ride...........hm?

I had a very much loved and missed TB stallion who people said should be shot, but I loved him to bits and thought it was character..... ;D He never once kicked me or bit me and always behaved beautifully apart from when there was anyone in reach of being savaged ;D He truly was a one in a million

Yet again I agree with you halfpass! So easy to train them not to barge, I'm constantly surprised at what people will put up with.
I don't worry about any stereotypies except to alter management to minimise them as a horse performing one shows that is stressed in some way - mine all live out so tend not to develop any, and the only one with any we think was shut full time in a box on a livery yard - and came home bargy too (sold as weaned foal, came back as entire 3yo, hastily cut!) but is no longer.
The worst thing for me to deal with is ones you can't catch - I have one D 17yo broodmare bought from the Cob Sales that I have to drive in as you can't get near her in the field, doesn't sound too bad but not that convenient when in a herd of 15 three fields away! In past times I would have followed her round the field until she gave in (early Monty Roberts!) but as the record was 4 hours and I'm no longer up to that I haven't tried to change her mind about it. Really kind and fine when in but not really a people person which most of mine usually are.

That so sounds like my D mare, who once climbed a tree when cornered .........but once caught, she's brilliant and can do anything with her.Now I have a special catching place and system which works well ;D

Most vices are d**n annoying really but wouldn't stand for a full on rearer especially as its my daughter that rides them not me, every pony we have has had a little mini rear at some point when having a paddy but never a major one. Our Sec A used to door bang which was highly annoying Our little bay pony would crib on occasion but what he did in his own time was his own business, he was stabled next door to a habitual wind sucker who was very irritating when he was grunting like a pig every 5 seconds The worst thing our grey pony does isn't a vice but just annoying- whenever I go to put his head collar or bridle on, he suddenly finds the floor very interesting and has to stick his head down for a sniff and refuses to come back up, drives me mad having to rummage around on the floor to get his bit in, he also insists on clearing his nose by snorting in my face several times first thing in the morning, the bad mannered bugger

I hate, hate, hate ponies that won't load but then I guess some people would say that is not a vice.some would agure that bad loaders have been made like that by bad driving or some sort of bad exeperience, i am not convinced

Our cob mare only ever tried to be naughty to load once. We were at a show parked next to a lorry in which they were trying to load a horse, for over a hour she watched intently as this horse put it's two front feet on the ramp, get told it was a good boy and something to eat then step backward off the ramp, we offered to help which was refused as they didn't want to rush him. We unloaded our mare did her class and came back to the box and next door were still trying to load their horse, thinking we would look Oh so professional we walked Melly to the bottom of the ramp she stopped dead put two feet on stopped and stepped off again, we tried again she put two feet on then stepped off again, she had been watching the one next door, she didn't get a treat though, she got the bristle end of the broom up her bum which soon changed her mind, but even now she will still try it on just in case she may get some food for putting two feet on the ramp.

I think habitual bad loaders are those that haven't been properly taught to load in the first place and instead have learned to fear the whole thing. Often bad travellers will load fine, I don't think they connect the two different experiences in their minds.

I hate vices full stop!! One of my ponies used to rear and come over the door, was soo hard to stop him from doing it!! One time he actually came over and the only damage he did was a cut on his leg a broken stable door - i thought it would have scared him so he didnt do it again, but it didnt!! Ended up putting a full grill up as he was attempting to come through a weaving grill and the little window in the corner of his stable. Finally stopped him doing it but it took sooo much time - stupid animal!!!

Have a lovely pony that windsucks. He is the sweetest most affectionate pony and although its annoying banging back in the fence posts he pulls out I wouldnt change him for the world.
