Was recently told by a judge that my pony didn't have enough ring presence in his class. He's only a youngster and want him to be a childrens pony when i sell him, so was really proud that he did everything i asked and was beautifully behaved. Was just wondering is there anything i can do to make him stand out more or give him more presence?

I wouldn't worry about what the judge said. Sounds like he will make a fab kids pony. Keep doing what you are doing with him.

Some ponies that appear not to have a lot of presence to start with, develop more as they become more confident and fitter, so long as they're enjoying what they are doing. I would also say, don't overshow/overschool them, or work them in too long, let them go into the ring still with a bit of spark and encourage rider to show their pony off, rather than just trundling through the motions, if that makes sense!

Some people have commented on certain ponies have presence and I look at them and basically think they are nutters, very spooky, eyes on stalks, running on adrenalin and totally unschooled.
Sounds to me as if that is the sort of thing that particular judge is looking for. Personally I prefer them well behaved, schooled, happy and going sweetly - and that is for me! let alone a child.
Be proud of your pony.

A pony can still have ring presence, without being a nutter. If a pony looks half asleep, then no he doesn't have it, doesn't mean the judge is looking for something with its eyes on stalks. Childrens ponies can have ring sparkle and be safe believe it or not! As for unschooled we have several, very well schooled horses and ponies, who have plenty of presence.

You may not have done, you have no reason to have, you dont show do you? Personally would prefer to see even a first ridden, look like it is awake and enjoying his job.

no you can't make a pony have ring presence, they either have it or they don't even if they are babies.

your pony may well develop more presence as he and his little jockey get more confidence, playing it safe is never a bad thing with babies and i wish you the best of luck nat12 are you trying to pick fights here as your tone seems a tad aggressive?

Me? im a lover not a fighter! Where have i been aggressive please? Presence is not about energy, presence is natural, so as emixx says they either have it or they dont, feeding may well give energy, but not presence, i think that is where people get confused with the nutters that sageandonion describes.

Cassie30 (aka nat12) I think I speak for everyone when I say bog off, this way you may confine your smites and very sad comments to myself and your stupidity may be confined.
I am sorry I cannot put this in a more dignified manner, but frankly it is late and I have neither the time nor the patience.

Nothing wrong with ponies with no presence.feed will never give them natural flair, but never mind, if people want to listen to feeding advice from people who confuse presence with energy, that is ok by me. Bethy enjoy your pony, if your main aim is not showing with him, then it really doesnt matter.

I bought my mare Lilly - grey - in the piccy below. No-one liked her, from the dressage world. She was skinny, downtrodden, her eyelashes poked downhill and she certainly had no prescence.
3 months on....her eyelashes are curled and if you didnt know better, you would think she wore mascara!
I studied Horse physcology a few years ago and horses/ponies that are treated like GODS by their owners, move up the ranks with the other horses.
Think about it. Kids that are LOVED and CHERISHED by their parents are not riddled with the insecurities that those kids have whose parents treat them badly. They dont know anything other than that they are georgous and clever, not to mention talented, as their adoring parents tell them this daily.
Horses/ponies CAN respond to a positive environment and go on to achieve a real element of "look at me" so I think its unfair to lump all horses and ponies into the same group and assume the worst.
Lilly is now highly coverted, by the dressage fraterninty, whom deemed her "sweet" a few months ago...........
My little pony MINI came to me, from a produced yard, which her owner said she hated. With us, she is allowed to espress herself as an individual and she certainly has enough "look at me - I am the best" to satisfy me!

Presence can come with confidence. If he's working hard and concentrating on what he's doing he won't have as much presence as one who has been there, done it and got the t shirt. I'm sure supermodels don't look sparkling when they are filling in their tax returns!! Give him chance and he can sparkle, it's nice that he will do his best for you instead of seeing monsters in every corner

Our horse is only fed Happy hoof but possesses far too much ring presence-how does one get rid of ring presence? He is well schooled and not at all spooky just very "look at me " in the show ring and quite a lot of horse to hold-think this is more of a problem and would prefer it if he was more to the other side. Good luck in finding it-we would be willing to share some if we could!!!!

Once he gets used to it all im sure he'll grow confidence and start enjoying it, thus probably giving him more presence. However, i do think you should just ignore this comment that the judge made completely. It was a comment made only the once. If you find that all judges say it when you show him then start to worry about it. Apart from that just keep going, love your pony for being so good and enjoy yourself!! That is the whole point of it!!! Good luck for future seasons and let us know how you both get on. xxx

yes i would agree on the surroundings a horse/pony performs on makes a difference to the way they perform in the ring, but to get all round ring presence it has to be natural

Baby ponies shouldn't have too much ring presence. If you force them into it ( which won't work anyway) they won't be calm and relaxed in the ring. The first time you take a pony out you shouldn't be aiming to win you should aim for him too be relaxed. Espically if he's going too be a childs pony. Good luck with him.
