Yes I know I am being neurotic, over cautious, first time mummy/granny and all that............ My lovely Violet who is now just 4 months gone, has lost a bit of weight (she was overweight) as the grass has gone and I am not feeding her too much, as everyone says that being overly heavy is not good for them She doesnt look pregnant anymore She is a maiden mare, so should she look pregnant at this stage?

A maiden mare on our yard went to a show at about 9 months gone and the judge questioned if she was in foal! Don't worry. I know, easier said than done!

She will be fine lovepink. Maiden mares tend to show less than old timers sure she be fine. Brindlerainbow my fingers are crossed but we know what a complete slapper she was so all hopeful. Keep me informed.

I'm sure she is fine, never actually breed myself but friends have, someone I know took their mare showing all season thought she just had a bit of a hay belly, went to the field one september morning and there lay a beautiful filly, we didn't even know it was pregnant lol xxx

OMG LP your making me nervous!! LOL
My mare however does look pregnant but she's looked pregnant from the start! We have hardly any grazing so I feed her as I normally would and she's doing fine - otherwise she'd lose weight too which i dont want her to going into winter!
Good luck! I've got 19 weeks left to go!! EEEKKK! lol

she probably looked pregnant in the begining due to the hormone change andthe lush grass but as the pregnacy progresses it all settles down i wouldnt worry maiden mares are funny things you wait till shes in the last bit thats when the time really drags on

I have bred 15 foals mostly tb and they are all different, they usually start to show around 51/2 months and it is the temperament change you notice first. They look straight through you to a speck on the horizon, and make you feel as though you are not there. I had one foal that never stopped kicking inside its mum, when she was born she was the quietest thing you could meet.!

Panic not! At 4 months the baby is between 1lb and 6lb in weight so somewhere between the size of a small kitten and a rabbit, so unless there is a lot of fluid then she should not be showing a lot as yet.
Keep an eye on her weight though as at this time of year it is very difficult to get it back on, I would up feed to maintain the weight now, we are just about to go into the difficult part of winter and she will need to keep warm, though the baby's demands are not huge at this stage so it's her you need to keep in mind at the moment with the diet.

Thanks peeps!
Violet is now 5 and a half months and I did think I saw a bit of a flutter the other day?
Keeping her weight on is seriously not a problem, she is a natural good doer, just like me!
I will take a photo of her later and you can all let me know what you think?

Our old mare never looks in foal, even after foaling she never looks like she's had one, yet she has huge foals, god knows where she keeps them.
