I was wondering if anyone knew if this is normal? I have a 7 1/2 month old miniature schnauzer. She came into season in October her first one, she has now come into season again about 5 weeks later! Is this normal???

the timing of the first one is completely normal but you would not expect her to have her second so soon after. i wouldnt panic. i would just talk to your vets and discuss spaying her after this one. problem solved then!!

Sometimes you get this esp with the first season, just keep an eye on her and keep away from entire males obviously.
Are you sure it has been this long though, sometimes it can just seem longer? The average season will last around 28 days and some won't ovulate till near the end + rem after they have gone straw coloured they will go red again till the end making you think they had stopped when infact they had just been ovulating.
One of the pups I bred a couple of yrs back did this with her owner for the first season. 6wks then she moved house and went on again for another month. The next time was normal 6-8mth intervals. Hope this helps a bit!! ;D

Thanks for the replies!
I knew the 1st one was normal, just a bit concerned about coming in again so soon. It was about 5 wks ago when she 1st came into season. I'm sure that one was over and done with! So from your advice maybe this is the end of the 1st one just a bit longer than usual. I keep turning up a the vets with silly things, costing me a fortune to be told all is well/normal!! lol So I thought I would ask on here 1st. I did myself think because she was so young and so soon after 1st season her body may have got a little confused. I really don't want to get her sprayed as plan was to breed from her. She is absolutely fine in herself full of fun and eating well. Once again thanks for taking the time to reply, I love this site!!!

You are more than welcome, i'm sure she will finish soon. Keep an eye on her though if it goes on a few more weeks longer phone the vet to ask whether to get her looked at.
Word of warning though, my first litter a few yrs back bet health testing, setting up equip etc cost more than £2000 so i would start saving now lol! oh and sleep as much as you can before because you won't when they arrive he he. What breed do you have?

with regards to seasons, for the first 9 days (approx) the discharge will be bloody, it will then change to a straw coloured discharge for another 9 days (approx). ovulation occurs at around day 11 (2 days after the discharge colour change). i wouldnt worry too much, im a veterinary nurse and can honestly say i would just wait and i will probably sort itself out. obviously if it doesnt then you should think about spaying her as the more seasons she has, the more chance of her developing mammary tumours and her health is more important than a litter.

and as someone else said, breeding is very expensive!! obviously it can be cheap but if you are responsible, it should cost you a fortune and exhaust you!!!

As SM says that is a standard season, unfortunately they don't read the rule book and you can have them ovulate whenever they please. One of mine 1st yr she was bred ovulated day 17 & the next time was day 11. Some are completely stopped season by 21 days & others are 28 days. The breeding lark is not straight forward and it is very expensive/time consuming. As long as you go into it with your eyes open and with health tested stock you have just as much right to breed as anyone. SM will see all the pitfalls as a veterinary nurse and a lot of indiscriminate breeding but there are also a lot of rewards done properly. Anyway slightly Off Top now, all the best xx

Thanks again! She is a miniature schnauzer. I am a responsible animal owner so if and a big if we did breed it would be done properly! I spent a long time looking for her, wanted a small scale breeder, born in a family home etc I got her from www.shearpawfect.com have a look their loverly. She is called Maggie. I have always had king Charles dogs for about 15 yrs now so fancied a charge but still a small dog. All my dogs have always been bit*hes but ones that read the rule book lol! But I will be of to the vets first thing in the morning my old king Charles, Lucy, has been abit quite for 2 days. Gave her a once over tonight and found a hot lump near her bum, infected anal gland? I think? She feels sorry for herself So there will be a trip to the vets! I first brought Lucy with the plan to breed but once she got old enough I was to scared in case anything happened to her!! Same thing will happen with Maggie I think I have some metacam (sp) do you think it would be a good idea to give her a dose, make her a bit more comfortable for the night?? Thanks Emma x

I've been to the vets, Lucy just had very full glands luckily no infection! phew!! I asked vets advice about Maggie. Advice was to spray her in 4wks time, I told the vet about the plan to breed but Maggie's health more important to me. So after a little chat, plan is if she next comes into season at the normal time fine but if she comes in season again to soon, she is to be sprayed! Now the next worry I so hate my animals having to be knocked out I once had a very precious King Charles, Jessica who was my 21st birthday present from my parents. Anyways when she was about 7 she need a operation and died during the operation devastated is not the word, I was pregnant at the time and every time I cried I was sick! Bad times. So as you can imagine I am very worried about my doggies having operations!!

I wouldn't worry about your dog having an anaesthetic they are very safe these days(although obviously not 100%) but I would hazard a guess that your Cavalier probably had a congenital heart defect which is not uncommon in the breed, led to losing her. If your bit*h is young and healthy I'm sure she will be fine.

My vets know what I'm like and are very thoughtful with me, which helps! Just things like they phone me the minute my animals wake up!

olliemat.. just remember that unspayed bit*hes have a higher incidence of mammary tunours and pyometra (womb infection) than spayed bit*hes.
Unusual seasons would worry me but as she is a young puppy, then wait till her second season
I breed too, but only for a few good reasons. 1 - to have a puppy 2 - to improve the breed
I had to have my beautiful brood bit*h spayed for health reasons and although she has only had one litter I did want a second from her to continue my line.
don't worry about GA's... just had my old girl (a 13 yo bit*h) operated on for mammary tumours (second lot) - she was completely fine. Trust your vets and the nurses.. they do a fantastic job....
good luck and keep us posted

That's nice that you have such a good relationship with your vets. I would follow their advice and bear in mind that it is better to have her spayed when she is fit and healthy rather than her getting pyometra(womb infection) and have to be spayed as a life saving op when she is already ill. It's amazing how quickly(most) bit*hes get over spaying - the biggest problem is usually trying to stop them over exerting themselves 'cos they feel so well!

That is what she had a infected womb as soon as the vets gave her the anesthetic her heart stopped The other dog I have been talking about in this thread Lucy ( blocked glands!) Still is not herself I am so worried because about 10 mins ago she has just weeded on the bathroom floor so so unlike her, in her wee is thick flemy/pus stuff (sp) This was one of the symptoms Jessica showed with the infected womb but I have also seen this in a bad urine infection but I always think the worse I feel sick with worry now. She is eating and following me around as normal just abit quiet and lying down a lot she is 11 yrs old .

bit of an update on Lucy. Phoned the vet for his advise. Bring her to the surgery asap. Just got back, the vet scanned her and seen 2 pockets of puss in her womb, open pyometra Lots of injections to keep her comfy and antibiotic injection. Gave me antibiotic tablets for her. I have to phone him tomorrow lunch time to update him and then take her to the surgery first thing on Monday. I am now wide awake and have a banging headache from crying so much. I am definitely getting my puppy sprayed, no puppies are worth this worry and sadness.

Thank you so much dazycutter thats very kind of you. I'm alright for now, I just get so upset and worried when any of my animals are poorly!! I think from what the vet was saying that as it is an open pyo and all her Ob's are good we may be-able to clear it up with antibiotics, not holding out much luck of this. I think I will ask to go ahead with the spraying tomorrow because we go away on the 19th for 2 wks, she is staying with my sister who I trust 100% to do the right thing, but I would prefer Lucy home with me during recovery. About an hour ago she became unsettled again last nights drugs wearing off! She's been eating and following me around as usual just feels sorry for herself I'll post tomorrow with how we get on at the vets. bye for now Emma x

Just got back from the vets Lucy is now in Surgery The vet decided this is what he wanted to do before I said anything. Took the puppy, Maggie along as well as she is still bleeding. Urine infection/ cystitis is the vets diagnosis so now she is on antibiotics. Now the long wait until the phone call...............

glad he decided to op..... she will be jsut fine... I had my 13YO operated on and she was great, also my 9yo was spayed a while ago when she was extremely poorly (see thread help needed with diabetic dog) I really didnt think she would pull thru surgery as she was so desperately sick... she did and was bouncing around 2 days later...
keep us posted......

Lucy is now home and tucked up in bed. Thank you so much everyone for thinking of her! She is very very groggy and still leaking messy stuff. Vet nurse told me this was normal! I love the folks on this site so kind and thoughtful even to strangers. Certainly helped me today. I would of wondered around the house aimlessly or sat at a friends all up set, instead I passed the time on here! thanks guys. Now what to do with her tonight? She has always slept in her own bed, I was thinking of bringing her up to my bedroom but think this may upset her, not her usual routine. So plan for now is put her next to the sofa and me sleep on sofa. I'm sure she will be fine else why they wouldn't of let her home, but because she is so groggy I think best if I'm near her? I must put a photo on here of her she is black/tan and very beautiful! Once again thank you Emma

Aw glad you have her home safe!! If you are comfy on the sofa then go for it- you prob won't sleep much for worrying if you are in bed (if you are anything like me lol) When we have a litter we don't go to bed for the first week (totally nuts) but what can you do they are our babies xx Hope you all have a peaceful night!! nearly forgot to say piccie would be nice!
