I too had the honour of working at Oakley in 1984, although the living conditions were shall we say, extreme, the chance of working wih such beautiful ponies far outweighed that. I was trained by Eileen Rose, Colin Rose's first wife, who never really got the credit she deserved. She had an amazing talent with young animals and she herself had worked with the great Count Robert Orssich. She taught me to longrein properly and its helped throughout my career with horses. The old classic ways are the best. I showed most of the ponies at Oakley, including Fun, Justin , For Fun ,Be Free and Julie and of course worked with the legend Bouncey (Bubbling Spring).

I had three danylan ponies a show hack type and two riding ponies all with oakley bubbling springs in back ground lovely to see the dany lan pic on here mrs ridgeway would be proud. Her ponies were top class and I have recently found a pony for my daughter with very similar lines to my old danylan ponies and he is a potential star too

I you to work at Oakley stud 82-83. I'm trying to get in contact with a girl I worked with Belinda nickname Dingle. We lost touch does any body know her. I have a picture on me sitting on Bounce we were both 17 years old me and him. I do remember marmalade sandwich. I was there for over a year so I might hold the record. I also help Mrs College for a week when she moved to Dorking. I made a life long friend with a new groom who left and when on to breed Derwent Mr Worldly Wise. Mrs College treated her staff like slaves. She also had this weird practise of putting the teaser Zaney a little black Dartmoor on maiden mates to break them so he broke their virginity before Oakley Bubbling Spring covered them. I feel there maybe some ponies out there that are not by Oakley Bubbling Spring but Zaney the teaser

I worked at Oakley stud 82-83 I've a picture of me sitting on Bounce we were both 17. I remember being treat like a slave. I was there for over a year. I'm trying to contact girl I worked with at Oakley stud Belinda Rudd aka Dingle we used to work together. I've lost touch.
All the time I was there we didn't get training most of the time we didn't have a head girl after 1 left because Eileen roses son tried to rape her.
Mrs College also had a funny habit of putting the teaser Zaney on maiden mares to take there virginity so it was easier for Oakley Bubbling Spring to cover them. I feel there could have been some ponies out there that were father by Zaney a little black Dartmoor.
I also help for a week when the stud moved to Dorking. I meet a friend for life that week. She didn't last long and went on to breed Derwent Mr Worldly Wise. She also found my lovely mate for me.

Very strong accusations there and I’m not sure here is the place for them. FYI - I worked on a TB stud and we sometimes ‘bounced’ the teaser on maiden mares depending on how they were as we couldn’t afford the stallion to be injured.

Regarding bouncing a teaser on a mare I agree. But that is not what Mrs Colledge did she let the teaser enter the mare to as in her words "take their viginity". Once Zaney was on and inside maiden mares it was hard to pull him off. There is a chance he may have ejectulated and so may have sired a foal. The mares were always cover about 15 mins later by bounce. Sybil had some strange ideas and relied on Eileen Roses knowledge. But even Eileen could not over ride Sybil as she relied on her for a home for herself and her son. The fact that ponies that winter up the road at field once owned by her daughter Jayne and were only checked by Sybil and Eileen daily. On returning to the main stud 1 had to be shot and another go to vet hospital after RSPCA were called because they were skin and bone. Sybil was tight with money often promising to pay 1 amount for work then once work was done giving you less.

Hi there, I was at the Oakley Stud for 2 years from 1978 to 1980 which was a long time in comparison to others. Gail (head girl) had just left and there were two girls who took her place, Jayne & Jo. Jayne plaited the manes and Jo did the tails! The 3 of us lived in a small room in the bungalow and had a small sink to wash in and no hot water. We were allowed a hot bath once a week in the main house. We had powdered catering milk and margarine in the evenings and we weren’t allowed to use the toaster as it used up too much electricity! And we had those famous marmalade sandwiches every day, sometimes the bread was 1/2 frozen! We had to do all of the washing up after her lunch parties where the likes of Janet Meyer (Keston Stud, Mrs Colledge had Keston Julietta as one of her brood mares but Julietta was only a youngster then) and Miss Colman (of Colman Foods) Eileen Rose was living in the bungalow at the top of the yard and I think her son, Nick moved in while I was there. Sybil was still driving her old Bedford TK in those days and I used to help her change gear at the bottom of the hill on the way to a show and if we were lucky, she wouldn’t hit the roundabouts on the way round. She was 74 then! I remember her vintage Mercedes that she bought from Bernie Winters and as I was helping her to put the roof on one day, she trapped my fingers under it and walked off with the dogs as I was shouting for help! I used to have ‘Champas’ as one of my pony’s to ‘do’ when he was entire and he was the most beautiful pony. I was there when Fun was born and he was named Fun because he used to make the other foals play with him, he was absolutely stunning as was Bounce who was also such a gentle stallion. I was allowed to cover a few mares with him in my second year and I felt quite honoured. His favourite ‘wife’ was ‘Set Free Of Oakley’ if I remember rightly and she was the dam of ‘Feeling Free’ Running Free’ ‘Loving Free’ and all of the other ‘Frees’ The was Lottie (the L family) Oakley Lillibet, Oakley Lenny etc and Belinda (the B family) Oakley Bettina, Becky, Bertie etc We had the beautiful Bubbles and her daughter Babette (who wasn’t the best mother in the world) and there was Oakley Bubbling Patrick and Oakley Bubbling Simone out on the circuit ridden by Chris Hunnable and Catherine Cooper. And Sybil’s granddaughter Bella was riding Oakley Glorious Twelfth who always put a buck in in his shows whatever they tried to do. Such a beautiful pony too. I was sent to help Janie and Bella at a few shows where there was always a good picnic basket to tuck into. Sybil would always manage to get a ringside parking space at every show much to the resentment of other competitors and would ask me to sit in the cab with her and teach me about confirmation and movement and we would pick out our favourites in the class. All good fun but very hard work for a young girl (me) who’d just left school with no idea of what a working pupil’s life would be like but I learnt a huge amount in those 2 years!
