Hi all, I have bought an 8 month old Weanling pony. He is lovely but he has started showing me his rear end too often, ears back are usually accompanied by this! Can anyone tell me the best way to reprimand him as I don't want to end up scared of him.

Oh lovely, sorry but if he was mine he'd get a clout, my weanling wouldnt dare, id say he's testing you out, i gather he's a colt still? Dont let him be the boss or you will have no end of trouble when he's older. I dont mean batter him round the head before any one starts on me, but a smack on the bum and a growled NO wouldnt go a miss. Watch he doesnt kick!

Definitely give him a loud growl and then when he comes to you with ears forward make a lot of fuss of him, sometimes they do it when they are uncertain of the situation etc. but still need to know that it's not acceptable behaviour

I had a colt foal who did this when he was eating and I realised I was giving him a wide birth so he was winning. I remedied it by walking pas him when he was eating with a crop in my hand. When he turned his bum and kicked out he got a whack on the rear and I kept on walking past - didn't make an issue of it and if he started it I finished it. I only smacked him twice and after that when I walked past he would just move to the side so he could see me. He never became nervous or resented me for it as I was very kind and positive with him at all other times - he just reaped what he sowed!

my colt foal has tried this a couple of times out in the field before he was stabled at night and I must say he gotthe empty bucket chucked at his arse and then chased for it by me, just like the alpha dominant horse in the herd would , he tried it twice, and has never done it since, dont let him off with it.

The closer you are the less leverage he can get if he does try and kick. Dont move backwards, move intowards him and give him a growl, or sharp dig in the bum. He'll soon learn that you aren't scared of him and he cant manipulate you xx
