Need a bit of advice on feeding my mares please.
They are currently out at night and on good quality ad-lib haylage during day.
!. Overweight cob mare who needs no extra feed ad struggling to keep weight off her. Not due until June 1st.
2. tb mare who can lose weight very quickly and did so when had last foal at foot. Looks right size now apart form baby belly. Due April14th
3. tb x who is nicely covered now but cant afford to be big due to previous tendon injuries in back legs. dUE aPRIL 1ST.
Am aware the latter 2 are in last trimester so thinking about maybe giving them some food. Last time my mares were due July so knew they would do well on grass, but with 2 being early april i realise they need more.
Will an all round vitamin and mineral supplement do in with some chaff and then introduce a stud feed a month before due? Thanks

HI, you should really introduce any stud feed at around 90 days if they havent had anything apart from grass. This is to ensure that they get their quota of vitamin e to pass onto their offspring. I would recommend Saracen feeds Stamm 30 for the fatties, you can give this with some chop and sugar beet when it gets cold if you feel they need it. It will give them everything they need to feed and grow the foal. I would then give the 'not so good' mare level grow mix (it has an inclusion of stamm within it) with some beet and chop too. You need to feed 2lbs per day for a horse. Cheapest feed balancer on the market and nothin else out there with as much research, especially for t breds! Just being nosey, but who are the TB's in foal too? I got one and dont know who to cover her with. Hope this helps. Had all the info from the nutritionist as I recently asked the same question at Your horse live!!

Thanks. Will do some research on that.
They are in foal to my coloured stallion in the hope of producing a middleweight plaited.

its 90 days BEFORE foaling. What cubes? Oats are good but not consistent, Beet and hay good. I would try levelgrow mix beet and chop. Because there is stamm 30 in the level grow. it works for ours. they can stay on that till they are 4 too! I have bred and brought up on it. lol
