Could not believe my eyes today.......... having had lots of snow in my area, I witnessed a rider taking her horse out for a hack on a road that would be classed as hazardous!!!! single track, untreated, ice rink!!!!!!!! Does she not care for her horse? ?? Utter stupidity!!!!! The horse was slipping continuously!!!

That is awful I will be checking the road later this morning before I even think about hacking out! No snow here! x

See people out hacking all the time - when the roads are covered in black ice.
Call me over-cautious, but my horses well being and safety - is worth more than a bit of fun hacking out, when its not safe!

We have a Bridle Path that runs up the side of our Paddocks, not in them the other side of the dry stone wall, and on days like today, freezing with sheets of ice on the lane roads, still they come up for a ride through the Woods, you can hear them coming along the lane and the horses legs going from under them I have to go in the Barn and cover my ears , I have had a few words with some of them, but they just don't care , this is all it comes down to, uncaring horse/pony owners who will as and when they deem so, ride their charges when they like and in what conditions they like , but thank goodness most of us have enough brains to not ride in such conditions

It gets better......... today I witnessed this same person giving lessons(if u can call them lessons) in a field of snow...two aged ponies......still earning money for the owner even when riding schools have closed because they can't use their arenas!!!!! Around and around these ponies went...all for an unqualified, uninsured teacher!!! I hate not riding my ponies but we have had 6 inches of snow and there is no way I would risk my ponies especially with the snow balling up in their feet.....how do these people get away with it....and why does it not occur to the parents of the children riding that this is dangerous for pony and rider? ? How has this girl got away with it for sooooo many years? Easy money I guess!!!!!!!!!!!

Mine have been roughed off just going out for a few hours and coming in as we frozen solid,
sadly on a yard i used to be on a new pony purchased for xmas had been there 2 days and went over in a solid field on turnout and snapped leg and had to be PTS last sunday,
so riding is somthing i wont risk in this, bless them both they are trying to have a trot and canter round field but then they both look unsound, not that they are but the ground is so hard they cant do anything really !!!!!!! other that pick their way over it in a fashion

Down here in Oxfordshire it still hasn't arrived yet, but it doesn't look as though it will be too long. It must be awful for all you people who have to travel quite a distance to do your horses and ponies. I really sympathise. It's all very well for people to say they like to see the snow, but for most of us it's not funny anymore. Remember - don't take any serious risks. If you do have to venture out in the car put a shovel, blankets, flask etc.in the back. Hopefully you won't need them, but you can bet that if you didn't take them, then you most likely would. Sod's law! Make sure your mobile is charged up and topped-up and that you have the necessary contact numbers on there. One last thing - if you have any left-overs PLEASE throw it out for the birds and place a plastic tray (I use an emulsion paint tray) of water outside for them. Starlings, especially, love to splash about even in this weather. If you use a plastic tray then you can poor hot water on to thaw it in the morning, without the risk of cracking a proper bird-bath. I've just looked out the window, while I've been writing this, and guess what ...........................

well with everything that has been going off the last few days I haven't put our scraps out til this morning. I was reminded to do so by about 8 assorted birds (mainly blackbirds and a robin and his wife) fluttering round and making lots of noise at my kitchen window! they are now making even more noise scrapping over half a loaf of bread, some stale cheese biscuits and jacket potato skins. At least the mr and mrs squirill have been sensible and appear to have gone to bed for the time being! they usually chase the birds away before they have a chance to get to any of the stuff we put out. very cheeky squirills, they use my flower tubs to stash there nuts and make a terrible mess of them. then stare at me in disgust when i empty them for the winter so we have to put peanuts out for then to make up for it.

I dont think I better put anything out for the birds. I have 3 cats and they would eat the birds!

re the uninsured person giving lessons, can you not report them, surely its an accident waiting to happen esp in this weather!!! do they not realise if someone had an accident they'd be taken to the cleaners!

More snow overnight here, and it's still coming down, quite heavily now instead of the fine stuff we've been getting. I think the novelty has well and truly worn off now, it's time it was gone so we can all get back to normal.

Havent seen any one riding round here for weeks, iv just chucked every thing out and roughed them off, the more you stable them the more risk they will injure them selves when they finaly get abit of turn out.
