my neutered boy went missing for a month- came back Christmas day- however he is very thin and I notice he has a few ticks on him- how would you remove them- I will take him to the vets as soon as they are open, thanks.

You have no need to go to the vets buy Frontline from Manor Pharmacy or similar and that will kill them within 48 hrs and they will drop off
dont try pulling them out cos you could leave the heads in and they then can become infected
old fashioned method if you have some nail varnish remover put it on some cotton wool and dab it on the tick it should kill them never tried it so not sure it works but Frontline will

you are absolutely right wanting to get him checked over. we have cats come in to work that have been missing for months and get thin and although its most likely just malnutrition this can cause deterioration of vital organs so def worth getting the once over. i would use frontline to treat any ectoparasites but if any ticks are still remaining get you vet to remove them at the appointment. do not make the mistake of feeding him loads because he is hungry, just offer him small frequent meals of something bland like chicken as the things like whiskers/felix pouches will be far too rich. keep fresh water on offer and let him rest. thats all you should worry about til the vet checks him.
make sure you let us know how you get on at the vets x

He is picking up- I work as a carer, so know small bland feeding and water, turkey very handy at this time of year - I hardly dare say it, but hope I'm winning, will catch up with the vet tomorrow- I'm not as worried as I was frontline on the extras!!!
