Any ideas how to stop a 4yr old spanish horse poking its tongue out the side when ridden. Perfect manners and he's working well, but always has his tongue out no matter what bit I try.
Anyone else had this problem?

Obviously get the teeth, the back and everything in between checked as you do. Speak to the dentist and ask him to give you a general description of the horses mouth and whether the tongue is large/fleshy etc and whether she is teething. Then I would have a chat with a bitting expert either over the phone or some till come out to help you select an appropriate bit (rather like a saddle fitter).
I did have a mare that did this and was told it was a baby thing and she would get over it. At that time, there wasn't the multitude of specialist bits there are today and the dentist told me she was teething. I turned her away and let her mouth calm down as I did not want this to become a habitual thing. She was fine six months later but I could not tell you if she just got out of the baby phase or if the dentist was right.
Whatever anyone tells you, don't slam the mouth shut with a flash noseband or anything else.

I agree dont shut your horses mouth...... I have a 4yrs Arab stallion who does the same, he came to me to back and has aways done it....think he was bitted to low to start with and with him being entire there is tension. With him its a contact issue so I just work on rhythm and a constant contact and he improves everyday. Also every time he does it I growl at him.... and that works a treat...lol men eh.

My horse dentist recommended a pee wee for my mare who has a fat tongue and little mouth. They are tiny bits and take up no room at all in their mouths. You hang them low, so no creases in the corner of their mouth.
Worked brilliantly for my mare and then numberous other horses. Once they have accepted the pee wee, after about 3 months they go back into normal bits Nuele Shules or Mylers or KKs as these bits are very cleverly designed and very kind.
Google Pee Wee bits and you can read about them.
