Hi, I have a stunning 15.1hh pure bred arab mare who has been successful in the show ring but is now due to foal her 2nd pure bred foal in 6 weeks. My dilemma is I have booked her to a very well known 13.2hh show pony stallion with a view of getting a 14.2hh show pony foal to bring on for my 8 yr old daughter but now been advised that a 50% PBA is not desired in show ponies. What are your thoughts. Any advice would be gratefully received.

it may even have more Arab blood that depending on how the stallion is bred, I would be looking for a stallion with no Arab blood at all preferably as near to TB as you can get.

Welsh B x Arab, they make really genuine ponies! or a part bred welsh B! also you have 2 societys to register the foal with then, welsh and arab!! take a look at my webby, i have a selection of B's and pat breds standing at stud 2010 www.langwedhstud.webs.com

Halfpass is right, if the stallion you are sending her to has Arab blood as well then the foal will be very high percentage of Arab and would look probably look out of place in a show pony class. Maybe look for a stallion that is TB x Welsh B, good luck

Thanks for the replies. Yes I have already thought about the stallion having a percentage of arab blood which is ruling out a lot of lovely stallions. I am now thinking of a looking for a small TB to put her to to breed a small hack instead - a straight cross Anglo arab. She is an exceedingly fine mare not chunky! It just throws my plans of breeding a 14.2hh SP for my 8 year old daughter to have in 5 years time.

I think its more important to consider 'type' rather than just percentage! You can get part breds with only a small % look more 'araby' than some with a very large %! I have done exactly the type of cross you are considering and been very pleased at the outcome, but I would say it depends much more on the type of arab. I have a french pure bred arab mare who I have had 4 foals from - 1 a pure bred and 3 parts breds. Her 2009 foal is over 80% arab but you wouldnt guess that from looking at him - or by his character! The mare is french racing bred - so looks much more like an anglo or part bred herself - hence she doesnt throw very 'araby' foals. I also did the same cross from a much more 'typey' arab who gave me a lovely filly but she does look more araby. That mare was much more suited to breeding pure bred arabs. I would also say that not all judges are against the more obvious arab types (as part breds or show ponies I mean). Yes I expect you will always get some that dont like much arab in their show ponies, but just as equally you can get judges that dont like chestnuts - or grays - or anything with too much white markings - etc etc! As with all showing it may just be about picking the right judge for your type. There are lot of successful show horses/ponies that have quite a percentage of arab - just some people still consider any arab blood to be a bad thing so they dont boast about it! You can see photos of some of my part breds on my website www.murraybrookstud.co.uk it may give you an idea on what you may get from that cross.

Hi I have a 15.2hh TB stallion he is ideal for the straight cross as has super limbs and is deep and a lovely mover.
The other advantage is he is licenced NPS so stock by him can be registered with them so can be shown.
I got your pm we are hoping to take some fresh pictures of him and i will forward to your email.
You are welcome to come and have a look.

Thanks Teddydog, look forward to receiving them. She is due to foal in 6 weeks and I will send her to the stallion at 4 weeks after foaling
Tigger, I know what you're saying about the judges as this year I showed a pba with just 14.97% arab and definitely nothing araby about him and although he shone in SP classes he didn't do too well under the out and out arab judges. Not pretty enough for them!
