We have just weaned our foal this week ( a bit late I know but we were short of stables so although he could of come of her over a month ago - we had nowhere to wean him until now) should we keep our mare on stud mix - she is due again end of May? Or take her off it and start her on it again around march/april?

We stay on it all year round except for a couple of weeks at the time of weaning until the milk has dried up, and have never had any problems. Once her foal is born, they goes onto Suregrow too if necessary until weaning, and have one this year who has stayed on it throughout.

i would be tempted to knock back the mares feed a touch just till shes dried up alot would depend on the type of mare . we dont feed hardly any of our native broodmares mix but if shes a bigger mare she might need it .

Echo Denrowstud as you don't want her to have too much protein while she is drying up, it could bring you a lot of problems. You can always go back to the stud mix when she's been dry for a month although you really only need to feed stud mix for the last trimester, a maintenance diet should be adequate until then with plenty of good forage especially if your mare is a good doer.

thanks for your advice everyone - I have taken her off the Stud mix for the time being - ie milk drying up and will put her back on it a couple of months before she is due. Will just keep an eye on her and her weight - general outlook. She has dropped a bit of weight because I think he has took so much out of her and I really would have liked to have weaned him a bit earlier than I did - but I couldnt. Any one ideas for the best feed for our foal - ie grow and win etc. what is the best coz when you read up they are all good!!! His dam is a thoroughbred and he is by Razzle Dazzle Royal - pba. Hoping for a small hack - although looking as though he is having a few growing spurts lol!!! Any advice?

Was he sharing the dam's feed beforehand as if so, I'd keep him on that for at least a month as it's the one constant in his life just now, no need to upset his stomach too. Later, you could try D & H Suregrow, that's very good for babies or keep with a stud feed, whichever suits best.
