Had a fanstic colt this year and went to put my mare back in foal. She was A.I. and the scan showed she was not in foal so we did it again and again the scan showed nothing. She was put in September. However she is looking amazing and like she did last year when roughly 3-4 months. Very round however not fat. She is on very good quality haylage and Stud Balancer and she does come in, probably pammered to much!! Everyone that has looked at her cant believe she isn't. My vet who is exceptional is coming next week. However just wondering if anyone had an experience of their mare scanning and showing nothing and then being in foal???

Hi I had a mare that was scanned at 28 days and I was told she wasn't in foal and she went on to produce a healthy colt. Why don't you buy a Wee Foal Test kit and do it yourself will save a call out charge from your vet and they only cost £20.

At my stud we have had this happen to us a few times. i had one scanned three times, by threee different vets !!!, 4, 5 and 20 weeks and still showed nothing. Then the mare started to come in to milk and the vet said it must be a false pregnancy, then the vet tested after much persuasion, and got a 'pretty big nip' from the foal, 6 weeks later the cheeky las popped out perfectly healthy.
good luck with yours

If she was only scanned on an "in foal" scan she could be a couple of days later in her ovulation so could have been missed, although our vets would say to scan again in two or three days to make sure. If she was scanned at 28 days the pregnancy should have been extremely obvious and should have shown an embryo. Any good stud vet would not miss that.
How exciting for a possible foal!!!!!

So sorry, maybe it is because her muscles haven't gone back to how they were before her last foal. Our haflinger always looks like she is in foal because I think she has been used as a broodmare, she got a whole summer off two years ago. Are you going to put her in foal this year?

A friend of mine had her shetland mare scanned as she seemed to be overdue, vet said she was def infoal and would induce labour if it didn't arrive in the next couple of weeks , thankfully my friend decided to let nature take it course, turns out the mare wasn't even in foal! Imagine what would have happened if she'd tried to induce her? This is the same vet who also told me to starve my laminatic pony - who wasn't even fat and said that the happy hoof I was feeding him had far too many calories! Thankfully I didn't listen and he recovered well with what I was told to do by my much more experianced farrier!

I had a mare years ago, before scans had an internal at about 6 months vet said yes definately feel the foal, she went overdue and 12 months to day vet came out for a look, to be told their was nothing their she was not in foal, still to this day do not know what vet had hold of to think it was a foal, hense I do not use that vet any longer!!
