Move it much further away and let him find his own balance standing on his own feet? I've had ones that would only travel on one particular side of a trailer, and it was explained to me that when traveling they stand on the pair of legs on the same side, and spread those the other side to balance. Hence if they can't spread the ones they want to because there is a solid wall there (my trailer partition had a rubber curtain at the bottom) they can panic. This mare had to be given a much wider space in a lorry, particularly for her hind feet, then was fine.
I haven't had to deal with the problem since I've had the lorry, but i think if I was you I'd start by traveling him loose in a double space (I can take a partition out of mine easily) as I would a mare and foal, then if OK in the same space tied up, maybe cross tied to keep his head and front legs in the middle of the space perhaps? Then he would have plenty of width for the front legs at least, what he did with the hinds would be up to him!

I had a pony who did this in the lorry, although he'd always travelled fine before he was loaned out!! I found that he needed to be given plenty of space and seemed to be almost claustrophobic in a narrow space. Like Sarah says, let him travel in a double space and he will probably find his own balance.

I agree with the above. My mare used to find it hard, we give her plenty of room and travel her on more of an angle so she isnt standing sideways on.

We have got a pony that I have to travel in the trailer with no partition, he will travel fine in a wagon if you put him next to the ramp. I have watched him and he uses the ramp the lean against and steady himself. In the trailer he justs lift all 4 feet of the floor and scrabbles - its very frightening to watch

my pony is claustraphobic. He needs alot of room and finds his feet much easier when he isnt leaning.

I asked a similar question on here regarding a pony who had previously travelled well, the advice was remove the partition and use bandages instead of boots, I was very skeptical but the problem was totally resolved once I took the advice.

we bought a hack last year who seeme to travel well - came home on lorry OK. Had a hell of a job loading him into trailer first few times, and discovered he couldn't cope with the traffic noise, so we shut the back doors - big iprovement. Travelled all the way to Broomes OK in a lorry, then fell over on a very gentle turn when nearly home ( think he fell asleep!!). Last couple of times I have travelled him in the trailer totally loose - no headcollar or breastbar & back closed - he's fine, and loads a lot easier too!!

Try him in different partitions of the lorry to see if one space suits him better - we had one that would only travel by the ramp

lovepink, it is strange how they have their fav travelling space! The trouble is now, we have 2 that prefer the ramp space! luckily they go out together very often!
