hi have you had her back checked her pelvis might be out. if yes you need to ride her lots of correct bends holding the outside hand, is she young, no problems with injuries etc, a cob on our yard did it but he has a weak back end and as the work and muscle has improved his canter is alot better, does she d it in the field i bet not. also try counter canter on the other rein, this will help strengthen the weakness and get her out the habit.

Agree back check, pelvis definitely looked at carefully.
Does she do this on the lunge as well as under saddle?

Hi yes she is rising 7, had back checked in oct by Mark Windsor and yes she does do it on lunge - although when watching her it does look slightly odd behind, but it is when she is bringing both legs together before disuniting (like a little buck!)..........??

As she does it on the lunge and so it can't be something put down to the rider or her balance with a rider, I think it would be worthwhile talking to the vet about it.

My cob does this on both reins when he is really fresh, when you hold him back and don't allow him to be as onward going as he would like he changes behind, its almost like a protest so I have to immediately stop him and ask him for canter again but he would happily carry on disunited he won't correct himself or very rarely.
He doesn't have any health issues it is just a really bad habit because it has gone unchecked. He does it much less frequently than he used to but it is when he hasn't had enough work.
In your case I would get all the usual checks done - back, teeth, saddle etc but it could just be a bad habit which unfortunately takes some undoing.

Phil used to bunny hop in canter. Both back legs would strike almost at exactly the same time. It was even more of an issue on the lunge because of the circles. He had the physio out and since then he has been 100% better. We've been working on big circles, slowly bringing them smaller and not letting him fall into canter. If he rushes the trot and just drops into canter it is messy, whereas if you make it a proper transition it is much, much better.

100% get your vet or physio out straight away. Sounds like sacro-iliac injury. May need to be manipulated under sedation. Sacro- injuries are very sortable, but can take a few goes.
Please dont pu this down to habit, it can be sorted with carefull physio/manipulation and then fittening programme afterwards. Best of luck for a speedy and 100% recovery xx

In the first instance you should have the vet examine and he/she may recommend a physio, but you need a diagnosis (but there may be no problem at all) first. Vet might want to do flexion and other lameness tests.
Don't worry, if it is physical I am sure it can be sorted quite easily.

Hunter may have hit the nail on the head then. That needs to be looked into at the same time. No physio can sort that for you.

I'm curious - how do the ovaries and hormones link in with disuniting? Not very well up on mares, strictly a gelding person.

She could be suffering pain and pressure in that area r76 because of it, can often lead to what can look mechanical and or bucking, behavioural probs. Best to get all checked a said above-good luck with her ;D

Thanks everyone, this ovarie business could be the answer - have spoken before of having probs with ovaries, when fastening girth or straps on rugs this usually placid mare would make a lunge for you with her teeth- OH is missing half his cheek after the bite he got! At least I have got a couple of suggestions to work with..you never lets us down fellow HG's
Big thank you to everyone x

Update.....presently on the lunge we have been doing larger circles and she hasn't been disuniting, as I said this mare is extremely hormonal but at mo isn't showing any signs of discomfort which she does when showing/in season. I have made a note in diary of mood/not in season ( this mare still very *friendly* persons at gelding all year round! ) to see if a pattern forms. Have spoke with vet who agrees at present to monitor and we can review when going over to have marble fitted soon. Will keep you posted. Thanks Sx Thanks Mods for replacing word I had used to describe friendly mare! ;D It made me laugh, dont we use some funny words to describe their actions!!

I know, it's very PC and sometimes picks really odd things up as swear words! But we can't control it I'm afraid!
