Just wondered how other people do their shows and if anyone can answer some questions?
When we do are show we come stand, trot up from the judge then turn right, trot down one side, change the rein on then on the other longside halt opposite to were the judge is standing and salute.
This leaves me between judge and pony, does this matter?. Also you cant always turn right, is it wrong to turn left and then go into a show?
When the judge is looking at our pony I stand at the front, when she comes to the front of him should I stand to the side?
Hope this makes sense!
If anyone can help thank

when we did l/r we put a halt in the middle of our show just as we were coming through the middle to change the rein. I think the picture would look nicer if you werent between the judge and pony on the final halt though - just my opinion however

When we did LR (a long time ago!) we used to stand up for the judge (ponies lined up on our left), walk away then trot & turn right along the short side, change the rein across the middle (back towards the line up), turn left down the short side & then trot along the long side, halting wherever suitable & saluting. This would mean that I was between the pony & judge aswell but once we had halted I would stand in front of the pony & turn to the judge before saluting, this way I wasn't blocking the pony from view.
I would watch how Katy Carter does it now - whatever she does it works! Good Luck!

Last season, our show was this: . Walk away from judge . Turn and trot towards, past and away from judge, track right. . Immediately change rein across diagonal, showing a change i diagonal from rider . Track left in trot, again change diagonal, this time showing a few stirdes of sitting trot, track right . Down to walk . Halt and salute Hopefully this should bring you standig side on to the judge, without you between them and the pony, enabling your little jockey to flash that winning smile! ;D We keep to this show as we do equitation classes too as well as L/R pony classes and its easier for my little girl to remember 1 show rather than changing her show for different classes. Good luck xx Does this help at all? obviously quite a long show, so only at local level, sure judge of a class of 30 wouldn't appreciate this one from everyone!

I think in most LR classes it would be quite hard to track right from trotting back towards the judge without going behind the line up. Some judges ask you to start by trotting back to them and we always seem to end our show with me on the side of the judge but I then move in front of the pony and we do the salute.

We always did our right rein first, then changed to left, so as you say I would of been between the judge and our pony, however on the left we would open up a bit, and I would go at the end of the lead, so the judge could see everything, and see our pony halt, of his own will (his favourite part!!! lol) I think it all depends on where they line the ponies up, also if you trot a 3 loop serpentine, you will end up back on the right and your pony will be infront of the judge!

We did LR showing for 5yrs there are so many variations now. If the judge does not ask for set show, keep it simple, after your walk away trot back to judge & past, turn right, start full figure eight straight away ie don't go down long side, complete figure eight, then you will be on the outside of the pony finish with a trot/walk down longside to finish halting level with judge. If you do ever find yourself on the inside,as bunny already said you should step to the front of pony. Keep the fancy movements for Evening performance! When you stand pony up for judge, initially come in front stepping backwards until pony square, then step to one side so the judge can see pony from front. Practise this at home so pony gets used to you moving around. Hope that helps.

Keep it simple is the key ... if you are not asked to walk away and trot back then don't do it .... only one change of rein is really needed, especially if your child is a really tiny tot ... here is the show we used to do and you finish giving the judge a clean and clear view of your pony .... it worked extremely well for us:

I would go watch some professionals do it and video. That way you can watch and rewatch and pick up the best bits. Also would hopefully be able to see what made the difference in the placings.

Thanks everyone, we have started changing it abit. Short and simple seems to work the best! We have a young pony still learning and he can soon tank off alittle!

when i was on the lead rein my pony had a big trot so we used to: halt in front of the judge then walk away (5/6 strides of walk) then go into trot, and turn right to go up the short side, trot along the longside in front of the judge(showing her on the end of the lead) change the rein and onto the left rein. then go to change the rein back onto the right rein but halt and salute half way across in front of the judge so that leader is not between pony and judge. my mum always used to stand in front of the pony for the salute so that the judge could see her salute aswell. that show always worked really well for us even winning us championships at county level and high placings at the champs consistently

Gosh ckc, i'm glad I don't have that fast! Our pony has a stride but not a fast trot thank goodness!
If the o/p dosn't mind me asking questions on her thread, how do you teach your pony to trot at the end of the lead? Is it just lots and lots of practice? I can let her have some lead, but not as much as that clip in the last post!

I think the video makes him look faster than in reality! yes forward going but rhythmn consistent he was always very easy to run with. In the time we had him extremely successful in affilliated showing, rarely out of top two. Going on the end of the Lead is as you suggest practice & lots of training. The video was in our last year so had been doing it for 5yrs. I didn't do it like that at first-had a great teacher!

hi I do lead rein and have been doing it for 10 years, there is a set show as such, the line up of the ponies is always facing the audence. come out the line track left to holt and stand to show conformation to the judge. walk on, trot after say 5 strides and track right away from the line up of ponies change the rein after the corner, do not rush !!! on before the next corner keep troting around the next corner up the long side then slowly down to walk 4 strides of walk and a nice holt, you will be jugde side so stand infront of the pony and smile nod the head. the same for walk away trot back but then track left, always away from the line up of ponies towards the audience. always smile even when it all goes wrong only change the rein once, remember the smaller the show the less can go wrong and you have not bored the jugde
