Violets belly suddenly seems to be huge She is a good doer, but this isnt fat, its foal Farrier commented today how big she had got, especially for a maiden mare, who he said dont show so early, in general. OMG - is she going to have a baby elephant? ;D

LOL it's sooo exciting!!! My mare is now fed up (6 weeks to go!) and is hot and bothered too so is naked if she's in in the day and only in a light un-restricting rug if she's out! Bless her.
She's NOT a good doer but she looks FANTASTIC at the moment!
Have you seen the baby move yet??

Have given you an "in foal" karma xx
Yes I see her tummy jump quite a bit. She isnt overly keen on me putting my hands on it, cos when it wiggles, she doesnt know what it is !!!!!
Violet has been naked all winter. She is normally rugged right up, when in work, but none of her rugs would fit her, now she is so big and didnt want to buy more. She has a stable to go and out of as she pleased, so its not like she is standing in a field in the wind and rain.
She looks great, but I do worry she is too big too soon. Hope its not twins that they missed on the scan?

We will have to start a nervous wreck thread wont we.........!
Was your mare scanned in foal? I kept wondering if Violet was or not, yet hubby kept saying "well if she isnt pregnant, she has been eating cushions!" She has definatley popped outwards now though.
I am half excited and half dreading it.
It was my friends mare who lost her foal a few weeks ago, so that doesnt help. When I went into this, I knew about the risks and accepted them.
However, its still a very worrying time - GULP
Hopefully, we will all have a very successful and HAPPY outcome xx

LP just wondered what ever happened about your extra semen? Ha ha - it was discussed in the CHATS thread, but it all got removed as Hunter and the others got over-excited with such a topic...... ;D It is safe and well, in the freezer of the stud that do my AI for me. They never returned it to the stallion owner

Highhill - I hope it turns out ok? Violet is a maiden mare too, so people tell me its surprising that she is so big? I think I will talk to the vet about it and see if she thinks its a worry? She is coming up to see my pony anyway, so she wont mind taking a peek.
I do hope EVERY BODY gets a good result this year xx

Lovepink I'm EXACTLY the same - on the one hand I'm SO SO SO SO SO excited and cant wait but the other half of me says yes wait and I'm so worried it's gonna go wrong and f**k up I'm sure it'll be ok and have given you a 'in foal karma' too When she was first scanned in foal - a few weeks later she had this 'stuff' come out of her and even now they dont know what it was but at the time they thought she'd miscarried - I was gutted but was just glad she was ok. The first scanned showed a 'dead' baby (!!!!!!) and then my vet said i'm not giving up so came back 10 days later and found the heart beat and the little bugger was moving again! (PHEW!!) And her baby does somersalts in there I swear it does

LP, I havent had her scanned but as she never came back into season just assumed she had taken!! She's a funny bugger though and isnt that fussed about feed she is on suregrow, so have gone today and got her baileys stud mix to see if she fancies eating that instead!!!

OMG sparkle, what a worrying time you have had already!
I think we need a chart to show who is due when and we could all put our names on it?
What do you think?
If I start it, everyone could put their mares name and due date and I could put them in order?
Then we know who to start worrying about first !

Why dont you all do one of those tickerchart things and put it in the signature space at the bottom, then its there each post you do. I will find the link, its on my pooter somewhere as I use them, think they are a great idea.

Sparkle - I wonder if she conceived twins and miscarried one of them? It can happen, in humans too I believe.

It could well be that SarahP - When they scanned her in foal the vet said she couldnt see any twins but sometimes they 'hide' it was awful, I was gutted but then the little bugger popped up again!

Yes - someone on here lost both sadly earlier on that had been scanned as a single more than once. I've lost twins in the past too, at least you've got one live one in there, hope all goes well for her, I"m sure it will!
When I lost mine it was in Feb, three months early - one perfect black colt with four white socks and one bag of mush that had obviously died some time ago and kicked off miscarrying both. You were lucky!

Oh god that's awful SP I'm petrified of something going wrong and the vets have told me "make sure you time it - anything over X amount RING ME!!" I was like eeeekkkk OKay stop scaring me now! I really dont know how people do this time and time again - I'd be bald and stick thin with worry!

I suppose familiarity breeds contempt, but I've been breeding Welsh Ds and As for over 30 years so had lots of foals and very very very few foaling problems of any kind. As far as I can remember I've lost those twins, one born very prematurely as the mare haemorraged (sp?) within the placenta, a very odd one, and one that somehow managed to not get enough colostrum - no real excuse for that one, born and sucking fine, but it was pouring with rain although they did have a shelter available. We all hear about the ones that go wrong, and of course vets get those to deal with, but don't hear so much about the vast majority that foal perfectly OK.
Mine foal out in the field, and I've never ever had to get the vet to actually get one out. I have if I'm there broken the bag once or twice, probably not necessary anyway, they reckon now that most of those that people find dead in the bag and think have suffocated because it wasn't broken were actually stillborn in the first place. Usually they either break it by struggling or the mare does. The norm here is that I get up to find mare with foal standing, drinking and mare cleansed, even though I'm normally out at first light if I think one will foal that night.
I'm sure they will be fine, but I'm also sure your vet won't mind being called out if you have the least suspicion of anything being wrong! Good luck.

LP, is there a chance that she could have caught earlier than what you think? I seem to remember you had a few problems with AI, and then had a natrual covering as well. Are you definatly sure that she didnt hold with the AI? Because if she is that huge it could be an earlier conception date than what you are thinking it is!

That had crossed my mind, but she had 3 scans, all of which showed "little pink bubba" at the right size for the right many of weeks pregnant.
I showed Violet to my nice friendly vet on saturday, when she popped round for a cup of coffee, a chocolate brownie and to see Charm. Vet was not worried by her size, just told me not to feed her any EXTRA until she foals.

I don't think there is a "norm" for maiden mares - one of mine made space for her foal 3 weeks after being covered and looked huge when I picked her up from stud.....her belly has remained quite low ever since!
My current in-foal mare has got quite big in the past week - it's amazing how much further I have to reach to fasten the surcingles on her rug, lol!

My maiden mare never really looked in foal right up untill she was about to foal and even then she wasnt huge! When she did eventually foal, a week late and dripping milk for a day the foal came out with 'the' longest legs ever! He was definatly flat packed inside her! Foal - 12 hours old

This is my girl Small -Land Bellona taken last week. Her last covering date was 13th July and although she hasnt been scanned she has never come back into season, so fingers crossed. She is starting to look slightly bigger but not massive at all!!. I bought her last April she was in foal to Small - Land Extra Time and had 6 weeks to go and was quite big and got really huge by her due date, went 8 days over and her colt was born dead
