How many of you have exercise programmes for your horses? And do you stick to them?
Some of you might know Tocs has been out of work since November and on box rest cos of her lami, so I started typing out a 'back to work' training regime, hopefully she'll be up to starting it the middle of this month ( fingers crossed!)
I've started with just walking in hand round our fields, and have gradually built it up to 30mins on the lunge, inc some canter, which is the leve she was at before she got 'poorly'.
Thing is, I havn't put a timescale on it. How long do you think it should take for her to get from where she is now, ie zero fitness, to being able to competently work for 30 mins on the lunge ( I lunge her as if I was long reining, with both reins,)?
Any thoughts appreciated. xx
ETA : she wont just be getting lunged, the 'programme' includes, longreining on the roads and going on hacks with my daughter.

I think my mum said once that it takes a hunter around 6 weeks to get fit after the summer off, don' t know if that will give you some idea!

im bringin my big coloured into work after a ligilment problem im working in a HO system which i found of horse hero website google it. for 4 weeks as she has had back problems as well, then 2 months of long reining as taking it easy with her, and long reining in saddle then getting on, sounds like a drag doesnt it???. then i will be riding her everyother day, one day of a week, and in between riding her i will lunge, long rein, etc.... to keep her happy in her work, id say a few months depends on what you want to do with her but i have to to take it slow with the injury but the last bit is what she will be doing when shes fit and working.
