Have had many problems with my teeth over the years but toothache at present is a real pain! (pardon the Pun). I know I should just go and get the darn thing out but just have not got the money at present. I know If I go to the dentist she will say you need this done and that done and it will soon add up to an enormous bill. I have taken codeine to help kill pain but that always makes me feel sick and dizzy, don't know what is worse feeling like this with reduced pain or excruciating pain. Any one with ideas to help would be gratefully recieved.

It's not what you want to hear, but you really have to go to the dentist and get it sorted. Sounds like you may have an abcess, if so you will need antibiotics before they can treat the tooth. The longer you leave it the worse it will get.

Have you a dental access clinic near you? I'm not sure if they are cheaper or not than a regular dentist but I had one of mine pulled not long ago and it was only 17.50- bargain! You need to get it sorted cos it won't get any better without treatment

Ibruprofen or the dearer version Nurofen is the drug of choice the dentists will tell you. Agree with Brindlerainbow my tooth gave me grief for years in the end I made the dentist take it out. Oh the relief and no bother since.

Go to the dentist and get it sorted, you can't function properly putting up with that sort of pain, or drugged up on painkillers.

Thanks all for replies. I am going to book dental appointment as soon as OH gets paid as if I don't get this tooth out I may well go mad!!. As someone said I would rather suffer the pain of childbirth 20 times over than toothache. Struggling to think straight at the moment with gnawing pain. Wish I had one of those drop in clinics near me. It is also sensitive to hot, cold and cold air. MM don't think it is an abcess yet but could easily go that way. When it was really bad sometime ago, I took so many painkillers I made mayself really ill ended up in A&E. Nurse there said 'did you not realise that you had taken far to many painkillers' 'yes' I said 'but I just could not stand the pain'. Did not have the guts to tell her I was a nurse too.

Nursey have you tried one of those microwave heat bag things, I had a bout of toothache recently and found that really soothing, alongside the painkillers. And are you taking paracetomol doubled up with ibuprofen, as you're a nurse you'll know you can do that. If you can tolerate codiene, swap the paracetomol for co-codamol at bedtime, I find it helps me sleep too.
I agree it's worse than childbirth, at least you know childbirth is going to come to an end at some point! Toothache is the absolute pits.

I do hope you have a NHS dentist and if not and it is really bad, go to A&E. You can't be left like this. Do you not get any benefits that may entitled you to free dental care. Not pregnant are you? though that is a bit extreme to get free dental.

Yes I am with NHS dentist, really, really could not afford to go otherwise! Last time I went to A&E when it was really bad they just gave me tramadol. Said they could not do anymore which is fair enough but tramadol is hideous stuff. If anyone has never had it before , don't bother!!. Never felt so ill in my life, it is really strong stuff! Roll on 15th when my husband gets apdi and I can finally get this horrid tooth out. Watch out though as I may well be on here moaning aobut that, I am such a baby having teeth out.( but that could be because some time ago I had my jaw fractured having a tooth out) My eight year old son has got to go to dentist at the end of this month. OMG that is a trial too, he always, always faints even if it is just a checkup. I often wonder if my fear of dentists has rub off on him!

Nursery, you can't wait over another week. If you haven't got a credit card you can put it on and you haven't got anyone to loan you the money, then you must go speak to your dentist and tell them the situation. I would be disgusted if they won't wait a week or so for their money before treating you. You could offer to give them a post dated cheque.

I went to my doctor when I had an abcess recently, as I could not get a dentist appointment for another 4 days! He gave me Amoxocillin 3g a day for a week and it was bliss, after a few hours the pain started to go, so docs may be a choice to begin with as they will not touch your tooth with an abcess on it, and that is what you sound like you have, I sympathise.

Finally got round to ringing dentist to get appointment for next week. Thinking they would say Monday or Tuesday, bearing in mind I am climbing the wall with pain. Friday! Receptionist said I was lucky to get that. they have another dentist helping out at the moment as they are so busy. If not I would have had to wait untill May for appoinment. can you believe that!!!

My dentist is pretty good with quick appointments but I think that is because they don't have enough patients, there is a glut of dentists round here.
You could ring daily and ask for a cancellation and if it gets too bad, just go sit in the reception. It isn't good for business to have a moaning, weeping, lady, now and then giving a little screach 'in labour' style, with a bag of peas to her jaw (yes, been there, done that and got seen pretty promptly).

Just a thought nursery, x ray, scale and polish and other fillings etc. are in the banded cost so at least make sure you get your teeth cleaned for the same price. Check it out by looking on the NHS dental website.

I had an abscess and the pain was so bad I had to go to the emergency private dentist and it was so expensive but I could not stand the pain any longer.
Tooth abscess can actually be dangerous a friend at work ended up in hospital on a drip due to poisoning from a tooth abscess and they could not take the tooth out as the infection was so bad the anthestic did not work so she had to go on to antibiotics to clear the infection before the tooth could get removed.
My friends boss also got ill through blood poisoning from a tooth abscess.
However the good news is that the pain does go quickly once the pressure has been relieved (a bit like hoof abscess). I also took arnica before going to the dentist and that helped quite a lot with not getting brusing after the dental work.
