Hi,
What's the best way to teach flying changes? I've tried putting a pole down and asking her to change as we go over the pole, she does this but only changes with her front legs. Is there a better way?
Thanks

i do walk to canter across diagonal and then reduce the walk until he changes without walking - don't know if thats correct but thats how we learnt it!

Hi I find that cantering a change of rein across the diagonal to a courner is good. You canter across the diagonal re-balance as you get to the courner and ask for the other leg so start with you may have to come back to trot or walk like moll123 says i find this helps as they have a wall to lean on to start with as they get better you can gratually move the point were you ask for the change move into the center of your schooling area so they have to find there own balance. I have used this as it is how i was taught and it seems to work. even worked on a stuffy fell pony! He has it down to a t now. hope that makes sence.

I found really asking for a complete bend change across the diagonal with good stron aids
also ask for the canter, across the diagonal ask for trot then re ask for canter on the other leg... reduce the trot strides as they get more used ot it...

have you thought about raising the pole off the ground, if your taking him over a small jump and use your aids then he'l get used to that aid and associate it. once hes picked that up you can then drop the pole on ground again then once hes doing it that way then you can take pole away and he should be a pro
