my sisters pony is in a 3 ring gag on the second ring with bit rings(this is the bit she came with) and she goes lovely in it. however recently its been rubbing her an hurting her moouth its caused a bit of swelling and rubbed the skin, can anyone suggest another bit we could try, going to have a go of her in a happy mouth wilkie but have a feeling she will be far too strong for that. We have tried a snaffle and it was a disater, can anyone recomend a bit with similar strengh but that wont hurt her

Has it rubbed in the corner of her mouth or on her face?
My mare hacks out in a NS Universal (which is similiar to a 3 ring gag). I have to use bit rubbers on the inside of the bit, to prevent rubbing. Not the most pleasant look, but it stops any discomfort.
Make sure your bit isnt too small?
If you need to change the bit completely, then I would try a pelham, as this will be similiar strength to a 3 ring.

Does she have a dry mouth? If so a happy mouth may not be the best solution, perhaps a sweet iron or copper mouthpiece might encourage her to salivate and she might be more comfortable. Or a vulcanite or rubber covered pelham?

It's just that I remembered a thread from a while back where someone had gone hunting using a happy mouth bit and the pony had had a really sore mouth by the end of the day, and from memory I think it was caused by friction burning the mouth.
