i normally rode my sec D in a ordinary eggbut snaffle at home but he can be strong so i now use a wilkie snaffle and he goes fantasic in it.
when i show i use a double bridle ( eggbut snaffle and weymouth ) as i do open classes
i was wondering can i replace my eggbut with my wilkie in my double bridle . or is a wilkie and weymouth too much ?
thanks

Yes it is. A Wilkie has a different action to a snaffle and there would be no point.

I have seen this combination used on a show pony www.facebook.com/group.php?gid=178387463853 (should be able to view this even if not a member of facebook). The picture showing it best is the 4th one in that shows her playing up. I'd have thought it was a bit harsh to use both though!

OK. Look at the function. A double is designed to have a snaffle/bridoon bit which works on the corners of the lips and the bars to raise the head, and a weymouth with curb which uses poll pressure to lower the head. A wilkie works on poll pressure to lower the head so you have two bits with the same action so what's the point? A wilkie is not in terms of its action a snaffle and is not dressage legal as such.

You say you normally ride in just a snaffle, and only used the wilkie as he was being a little strong, you don't mention that you have had problems with the double you have been using, don't change the double you have been using if you have no problems with it.

My pony is not strong at all and can be ridden in snaffle, but when it come to a double he prefers to be ridden in a wikie and weymouth, dont no why he just does, you dont have to touch the weymouth at all and he just loves it, but if you use a normal loose ring / eggbutt snaffle has the bradoon he has issues, he just does go the same and feel has relaxed through his bridle.
All horses/ponys are different and whats work for one might not work for another, they are all indivduals.
I can understand what you are saying "Sarahp" they both have the same poll pressure action , but at different strengths.

I am not saying anyone is inexperienced or anything but with two bits thathave completley different action to be used together in the wrong hands could be very harmful and confuse the pony. Stick to a normal double.
