its soo cold my mare still rugged, shes started to spring an udder and is due end of march, should i take rugs of now and rough her off a bit before she foals??? she cant have rug on when shes due to foal so just hope the weather warms up in the next week !!!!!!!!  |

I never rug my mares to start with for that very reason.

Smokeycott - since we didn't know my mare was in foal she foaled with a rug on and all leg straps etc. in place!!!! She didn't have any problems at all but I would have taken rug off obviously if we had known she was about to part with a furry friend!!!!!
I suppose its upto you really - if you know your mare and she usually is about on time then I think so long as you watch her carefully you should be able to leave rug a little longer and hopefully it will have warmed up again. Obviously if she is a maiden and you just don't know what she will do then its a different matter and I would un-rug her now.

I would wean her off the rugs over a couple of days/nights. My mare wintered out and ended up with 2 rugs on (top rug froze solid on her when it was -15 so put another one on her) I brought her in about 3 weeks ago and put her down to 1 rug then none during the day but still 1 at night. She is now naked all the time and quite happy. She is due end March.

will start roughing off during the days this week and then "naked" next weekend, was hoping i could have taken rugs off by now but so cold ,
hey kt66 i bet you had a shocked when you saw she d foal and with a rug on !! nice suprize though!!

I've just taken them off my mare SC - she's due beginning April  And she's so hot anyway (baby keeping her warm!) she's doing fine and she's a TB |
