My 7 yo haflinger has obviously had a bad past or somehing that has triggered this bazare habbit , because since the day i had him , he has been a bit odd. He stops , and walks backwards. Hehas crushed me into fences and alsorts , even smashed them down with me on them . Im begining to loose hope with him , as I have tried everything , and although Ive been ridding for 7 years (not alot compared to some) I have NEVER seen or had to deal with anything so strange! Ive tried: *tapping him on the backside and getting harsher - takes no notice and carrys on * being calm and kind - doesnt always work *different bits , lighter but not harsher as i think this may encourage him more , doesnt take a blind bit of notice *riding bareback , isnt bad , but can be spritely , and not always going forward lol * had teeth checked and saddle checked- saddle did need re-flocking but hasnt had a major affect as yet
I think however I am slowly ( very very slowly) coming closer to working him out , but I would love to hear from any one and their sugestions!!

Would recommend getting back checked as well. When does he do this? Is it when leaving the yard, leaving his friends, etc.? Is it when he gets to a certain place? Or just when the fancy takes him?
If you hadn't already tried it I would have recommended a milder bit. Have you tried happy mouth type mouthpieces?
I think the key is working out WHY he is doing it, once you know that the rest is easy!!

Yeahh , thats what im trying to do!! Hes in a wilki at the moment , because he can get quite strong . He does on 2 certain corners , but quite often when it takes his fancey aswell!! We have had a few people look at his back , which is perfectly fine !! We have however found he doesnt use his hind legs very well , which i think may lead to unbalance and uncertainty and therefore is stopping because he doest feel confident enough to go further. I am going to have some sessions with a monty roberts problem horse specialist because she seems quite good , and I think that he needs to trust me more and vice versor. Thank you for replying

Could you ask your instructor or an experienced rider to ride him on those two certain corners. Sometimes you can tense up with anticipation, no matter how much you try not to, and then it becomes a vicious circle. It's like, you tense up expecting him to nap, he feels you tense, thinks 'what's going on' and starts to nap. Lessons are always a good idea.

I don't want to be pessimistic but you may want to get him assessed by a vet, rather than a therapist - I have seen a horse do this before and he was eventually found to have a tumour. Please don't assume it is a behavioural problem, it may be medical

My section C did this when they do it drop contact and kick forward and say forward any were. Dont worry what pace they go forward in as long as they go forward, then you can get the contact back
hope this helps

My 12.1 hunting pony used to go backward but worse - he trotted backwards! You have never seen anything like it in your life!!! He did it when he had to wait for gates to be opened, he has a tantrum, trots bacwards then bucks and rears on the spot till you fall off. Good news though, we sorted it out.... and once it was sorted he didn't do it again. By the way the bit or his back etc didn't have anything to do with it he was just having a naughty tantrum 'cos he didn't want to wait.

Does he do this wherever you ride out or in the school or paddock etc. Have you tried riding a different route etc

if ur pony napps or napps & goes backwards, slightly losen off the rein and send it forward, but remembr; say if ur going 2 turn right and ur pony desides 2 go the other way DO' NT LET IT if not it will get into bad habit!!!!!! i had a novice ridden m+m which was sent 2 us 2 bring on , he used 2 napp dredfully but when u don't let ponys do what they want and u deseid 2 be in charge ur pony soon will learn that, u are the boss!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! also when schooling try 2 use 2 dressage whips either side then when he goes to napp u give him or her a quick sharp tap and he'll get used 2 not napping.!!!!

My section D used to do this, very annoying and frustrating, i tried all of the above and was begining to loose hope, when one day he began backing of and dragging my legs along the fence, and i just got so mad and lost it, i was sat on him in the paddock and just slapped the reins either side of his neck, and to my amazement he moved off, very quickly, now when ever he tries it i just have to wiggle the reins, it works everytime, you just have to try everything till you find something that works, a long tedious process i know, but all it takes is time, good luck xx

I agree totally with Dartmoor, I have had animals that have done this, he thinks hes the grand visitor at the Hotel and you are the busboy picking the luggage up. You should be the master and him the slave. Until he realises this he will continue to do it! I solved the problem by hacking my horse everywhere it did not want to go, and my friend chased behind with a lunge whip, I also reined her back until she wanted to go forward. 10 days later a doll, and ended up a Champion Riding Horse.
