Hi we are taking a 15.2 tb to an in hand show early in april, I was wondering what to show her in? I think pelhams look smart, but she's ridden in a snaffle. What's actually correct for a show horse type? Also I have been told in the past to walk on the outside of my horse as the judge wants to see the horse not me! But also been told to allways be on the left. Any advice?

I can't help with bits, but when showing in hand you will be asked to walk your horse round the judge in a clockwise direction, so you will be on the horse's left which will be the side away from the judge.

if she goes in a snaffle, i dont see why you cant show her in one, with a pretty browband and a nice bridle. pelhams do look smart but its riders choice, i will be showing my 8 yr old coloured mare, in a snaffle, ridden and inhand x good luck

We always use a pelham in a mare, maybe you could borrow one and see how she is in it? I try to have as little contact with the bit as possible as they move more freely that way, my stick and voice give the commands. At the end of the day, she needs to be happy in her mouth, nothing worse than trying to run (or ride) an animal who is unhappy with their bit.

I use a snaffle and an in hand lead - the in-hand lead is like a leather lead rein but at the end it has a chain which splits in two and is attached to the bit on each side. If you are using a pelham then you will need double reins so an in hand lead would not be suitable.
I think the in hand lead is actually a much smarter look than having lots of reins in your hands.

You should only use a chain on stallions, not mares or geldings. If you are going to use a lead rein on your mare it should be all leather.

the owner of the section b i loan used to take him out in hand in a pelham, as they look nicer, but he has never been ridden in one, as he does hold hs head perfectly and some ponies over bend in a pelham when ridden, and his mouth is lovely and soft but i may try riding him in a pelham see how he goes, if he does not take to it then back to the wilkie:)

Thanks for replys, I want to use a pelham prefferably only issue is that this horse is on share and owner is a wary about changing bits. Iv shown all of mine in a pelham because I think it looks smart and so long as you lay off the curb rein and use a jointed mouth piece it's practically a snaffle.
