No I think he has to be licensed if you want to show him, I believe this is the case for all societies.

Hi there, I think sjc is right. Any 2 year old colt that you want to show in respective breed society affiliated shows must be licenced. I'm sure somebody will put us right if that is not the case. :-)

How do you get a colt licensed? Sorry to be dim, but I've always wondered! Do they license anything, or is there criteria that they have to meet, like a grading? Thanks!

For WPCS licensing you send the money to the Society and they send you out the necessary forms, then you have to get the vet to come and go over him - heart, eyes, mouth, wind etc (which means you have to lunge/loose school to get them puffing, best to practise first) to make sure he has no heritable defects, it's not a grading though. Vet also has to take some hair to be sent off for DNA recording. Then send all the stuff off to the right places and eventually he should all being well get his license.

Thanks, I thought there'd be more to it than that to be honest! So basically, anything can be licensed?

No, certainly not! They have to be sound in eyes, heart, wind and limbs - oh and they will check they have two normal testicles too. And no heritable defects, as I said. A long way from anything!

I think this might interest a few people. I emailed wp&ca to find out if i can show a 3yr old sec a colt in wpcs shows if not registered. This is the reply i got.
Thank you for your enquiry. A 3yr old colt can be shown in a WPCS medal class. The Society states that all stallions in stallion classes must be licensed. However you must check with the show secretary as other Societies have a ruling that 2yrs and over must hold a licence.
