Hi,
Does anyone have any advice for what to use in my strong 17.2 ISH when out on farm rides/hunting?
He's currently in a plain english gag, but the further the ride goes the less brakes I have, and on occasion his mouth has bled, which I feel very guilty about, but if I could find something stronger, I wouldn't need to pull so much, so it would be kinder on him?
He's not really being naughty, he's just keen/enthusiastic, but it's quite a scary feeling when you know he's not listening and isn't going to stop!
I've wondered about using a waterford gag, then he can't grab hold?
Any ideas/advice welcome. (He's perfect in the school/hacking in a snaffle, but when he hits those open fields.........) I'd say 95% of the time he's under control, but if I can just find that 5% more.......
Thanks Alex

i would suggest a waterford 3 ring gag so he cant lean on you and run thorugh the bridle, although you do have to be careful as they can be rather severe (as can any bit). Either that or a pelham with roundings and a curb. Also anything that tends to be a bit strong i would always use a standing martingale as alot of horses put there head up and fix there neck to get away!!!

Thanks Miss Muffett. If anything he puts his head down and goes! I do think Waterford is the way to go, so he can't lean, but am aware it's quite severe, but I'd rather take one pull and have him listen than a hundred and hurt him.

Ditto the waterford gag. They are only severe, if in the wrong hands, or if the horse needs it!
My sons pony is hacked in a waterford gag and a running martingale. He has light hands and hacks her on a loose rein. However, if she does start to be silly/strong, he has the control there when needed.
Good luck xx
