I am looking for some advice. I have a Welsh section A, and my daughter needs some more brakes. I am not talking out of control, but just to help her with show jumping, x country etc.
He does not like thick bits, or single jointed bits. I am not sure about straight bar bits.
He is currently ridden in a fench link cheeked snaffle. He will overbend.
I had thought about a fylde french link tom thumb pelham, but not sure if he will overbend, or if it would help.
I just dont know what to try. Any help would be welcome

is that a french link hanging cheek, what about a flash nose band, when you say you need brakes what is your pony doing, as children and pelhams should be a last resort in my opinion , and one rein with pelham roundings is horrid but happens because most kids cant use too reins as some have small hands, split reins better, however i would try other sorts of snaffles first

Yes I agree - flash noseband and a martingale, gives a lot more control.
If not - try a waterford snaffle. My youngest jumps in one, which doesnt overbend her at all, but gives him more control.

Thanks for you help here. He has a fulmer type cheeked snaffle, with a flash and martingale. He does not do anyhing wrong, but my daughter like to push on and is only a small 8 year old, and needs the confidence and ability to stop.

I had this trouble with a mare I had, not nasty but got a little strong in company, I found a Dr. Bristol gave me the little bit of extra brakes I needed.

My daughter used to ride her sec B in a Dr Bristol when she was 8/9 ( daughter not pony!!! ) He went really well in it and gave daughter the extra brakes she needed, much prefer a Dr Bristol to a pelham

Ditto LP, I was thinking a Waterford snaffle might be the answer.
I have a sec D mare who could get strong and lean on bit, especially when jumping (but hated any curb pressure at all and would have tantrum if felt curb!) and this really helped for her. And definitely much easier for child to have one rein, especially for stuff like jumping/XC.

I would def stay away from a curb if pony has a tendency to get behind the bit.
