I am basically writing this to find out if I am the only one that has this moan, albeit a little one, a moan none the less!! why oh why do show photographers take it upon themselves to photograph my pony...firstly - without my permission, secondly, then decide to jump out from behind a bush/judge/jump/other competitor just when said pony is doing its show/jump round/st :oand-up for the judge, and not only that....then decide to throw hat/tictacs/shake a bl :ody rattle at said pony to make 'it look pretty'!!! I was at an event today where I kindly asked a photographer who was standing behind a bush not to take photos of my ponies - never buy them anyway! after the class I went up to the photographer to say thank you for not disturbing my pony and for not taking the picture - I think he was jealous of my nice long lense!! because he very 'cionfidently' informed me, 'well, he obviously isnt that spooky, I took 4 pictures before you stopped me!!, I was very gracious and walked away!! I know that the photographer is only doing its job, but surely with long lenses - I have one on my camera for just the job and take fab pictures myself of my own ponies (has saved me a small fortune now I have finally mastered the settings!!), they could use a long lense and be outside the ring, how come health and safety doesnt apply to show photographers!! It wont be long before one of these photographers get themselves hurt of some small child / young pony gets dangerously spooked! I was driving at one show, when the photographer had 'tictacs' and was shaking it in the ponies faces - fine if you are stood in front shaking it, but with blinkers on, me poor pony thought she was being attacked by some strange noise and she couldnt work out where it was coming from....we didnt get placed that year, but funny enough the following year at the same show - won the class, not a tic tac in sight!! moan over, but would really appreciate to hear whether I am just being a wingy old bag, which is happening more frequently these days - especially on show days with photographers around!!

I must admit that I have often wondered how photographers are able to take photographs of people (especially children) and then put them on websites without actually having permission???

Most schedules now say that if you don't want a photograph taken of your child / horse, then please tell the photographer / secretary.
The problem of 'popping out from behind bushes' seems to occur mainly where the photographer is 'non-horsey' and just doesn't understand - . I've taken photos at many events & never had a problem.
We hold indemnity insurance in case any accident is caused.
In a showing show - the only place to really get a good photo is from the centre of the ring whilst they are going round, or whilst stood up in the line-up.
People do not buy photos if their horses ears aren't pricked and again - a 'horsey' photographer knows by instinct how to achieve the required photograph without causing problems.
We also find that even if people don't buy them, they are quick enough to put a link to say where the photos can be viewed when they are trying to sell the horse!!

To be honest the majority of photographers round here are not that good. I havent bought a photo in a long time as my mum, who takes photos from the ring side often has far better photos then the proffessionals. I've seen some fairly dire proffessional photos where at the same show mum has managed to get realy good ones. We often joke that she could make a fortune if she went proffessional.
Generaly I only buy a photo when mum isnt at the show with me or when mum says she couldnt get a good photo because of the angle.
I can see why the photographers stand in the middle, tis far easier to get good photos from the middle. I've never been accosited by a photographer though and I've never had one spook a pony.

I love looking at photos taken by the pros of my horses, either at shows or dressage!
Never had a horse spook caused by the photographer. Sorry, but I am always dissapointed if there isnt a photographer there.

I personally dont mind photographers taking pictures of my horse as I am often at a show on my own so this is the only way I can capture the special moment of championships etc, however yesterday at a show when I was running my section D out in his class and had to shout at the photographer to get out of my way, he didnt hear the first time so had to pull him up therefore ruining my run out he just laughed and said oops I didnt see you The judge placed me 2nd commenting that I could have run him out better

i use equipics they always ask the judges permission to enter the ring, and sure if you actually made it very specific you didnt want the pic taking they wouldnt, also we had some pics go up of a foal who reared and flipped at the time of taking the pic, they didnt realise and i asked for these to be taken off asap as wasnt pretty but caught at wrong time. Equipics will only use his hat and no rattles, one photographer from a well known company throws crisp packets and alsorts and wonder what would happen if he really spooked a pony !!!! luckily mine are that daft they would just mug his for the crisps first !

I think Equipics are pretty good. I have to say I have looked through all the schedules that I have here at the moment and not one of them says you can say if you do not want pictures taken. I am annoyed that one of my ponies had her easr back for about ten seconds yesterday at a show (because another pony came too close and she is in season) and there are not one but three pictures of this - and no others!! She looks like a very sour pony when in fact she is far from that.

Several years ago I was horrified to open a horse magazine and find a picture of my pony misbehaving. It was being used in an article. The pony wasn't named but a friend who had only seen him twice recognised him. I contacted the magazine and the photographer to find I had no rights whatsoever. The show had given them permission to photograph and they could do what they wanted with the images.
I asked why they hadn't asked our permission at the time to be told the pathetic excuse that they didn't know who to ask, What about the rider. Apparently if we appear in public we give up all rights to privacy.

I must admit one of the first things I do the day after a show is go onto the photographer's website to look for photos of myself. It is great if you have family or friends to take photos but I generally find that at shows taking photos is the last thing on their mind. Also if you have a good enough camera to take action-shot photos from a distance then you get paranoid about leaving it at the ring-side or even back in the lorry.

Hiya, I organise my own horse shows and i had one yesterday. However, I did not book any photographers for that show- but a photographer did turn up and start taking photos. With two of my judges that did not turn up I had to judge the workers and be the secretary at the same time! I honestly thought it was someones over the top parent being very enthusiastic about there child. When I find out who the person is I will ring him up and the report him to the police. I have done some tracking and he does seem to be a buisness that specialises in doing horse shows, but he should have rang and announced himself on the day the cheeky get!!! How rude!

Its ok, problem solved. No it wasnt that photographer. The man apoligised and said that he had just come to do one person. But he had never done horse shows before, so was very inexperianced about it. All ended on good terms. But you have really got to becarful in this day and age on who taking photo's I suppose.

I have just spoken to a photographer. Could I use a picture that he took of the pony that we sponsor on the home page of our website if I gave them a mention and a link to their site - and they refused! I won't be buying any of their pictures again!!

Well I have to say thank you to the photographer at Greenlands on Saturday, who I wasn't expecting to be there. I hadn't taken my purse (bit like royalty me - never have any money LOL). Anyway, I said we would look at the photos on his big screen and then order them online when we got home - he said no worries, printed them out for me and said phone me with your credit card as if I went through the online system it would cost me more than on the day of the show! Well done Jessie Ambridge!

The photographer we have at Leigh & District is great, he does things like muffle his camera during the winter dressage when he had to take pics inside so the clicking didn't distract the horse during the test.
However, on another note, as my "day job" I'm a journalist and so I know quite a bit about the law and taking photos and yes, if you are in a public place you can't stop someone taking a photo of you, your horse, your child or whatever. I'd recommend asking the photographer politely to remove pictures from his website or not to take shots if you think it will have that much effect - they're within their rights to say no, so being bolshy will get you nowhere. Best to be nice and hope for the best
