Hi my daughter broke our pure bred mare last summer, we turned her away and now she is a 4 year old started work on her again in January ready for the season. She is very quick to learn and has good days and bad days, a typical baby really She has been going nicely in a french link d ring snaffle but am not too sure on wearing this in the ring. Its quite an ugly bit as has large d rings but have tried changing to a wilkie style french link which, although looks so much better, she does not ride as well and really plays with her head. Would you keep her in the french link or preserve with the wilkie. I was thinking of trying to wrap some biting/mouthing tape round it to see whether she accepted it better. Traceyx

If she's still a baby does she need the leverage of the wilkie? I know they are snaffles and have used them to give my daughter extra brakes coming off the lead rein, but they can be rather strong... The last thing you want to do is make her wary of her mouth. If she likes the french link mouth how about trying something neater like a small loose ring or eggbut french link? I also swear by the full cheek french link.

Given that many judges don't like wilki's, I wouldn't ride a pony in one unless it needs it - no point in taking a chance on being marked down if the bit isn't needed

IMO wilkies are awful bits and will do untold damage to a baby (do see all the other threads on trying to correct problems caused by wilkies). It won't be the mouthpiece which is uncomfortable for her, it will be all the leverage being exerted on that immature poll.

why not get a loose ring french link. I would steer clear of wilkies my girl was in one she is now out of it but is going very differently the wilkie just made her hold her head in rather than doing it properly.

I hate wilkies too! Get a neater ringed D ring or full cheek - will look much smarter

I found that a loose ring snaffle that the pony can't get hold of helps our novice pony.

Hello,
i rode my 4 yr old in his first few novice classes in his D ring french link snaffle, agree they are not the neastest of bits buts that what he went well in and he was well placed in all of them. I have now changed to a loose ring french link snaffle, he hasnt been shown in it yet but if he doesnt go as well in it i will happily swap him back...i would rather him be comfortable and happy in his way of going..plus i dont want to pick a fight with him! good luck xx
