Late with reading H&H this week it struck me as a bit odd that Show Organisers do show at their own show. Their horse did win its class , the owner also groomed in another class and at some point was also involved in the slightly unsavory episode that was featured in letters to the editor this week. Would you organise and have your horse shown at the same show?

I think most of the shows we go to the organisers compete, im sure you could draw some sort of line between most competitors and judges these days. Think its all okay as long as the judge judges fairly!

I would of thought it was a NO No but it happens. Lately the organiser's daughter's partner took res sup at a show and seemed very happy about it. Talk about connections!

Can I ask how many shows would we actually have left if people are not allowed to organise and either they or their family compete at the same event. I think the answer would be very few left. Running an event is a hard difficult thankless task with not many volunteers. Provided the judges are fair I don't see a problem.

Secondly at many many shows organisers compete. I know from experience if all committee members were banned from showing there would be no committee's and as a result no shows. In various areas it seems to be the same old faces who get involved in running the shows for the rest to enjoy, why should they forefit any chance of competeing just because everyone else is too selfish to do their bit. As long as organisers don't 'fix' judges to suit their own ponies (which would be counterproductive as no one else would comptete) I don't see a problem with it.

Big no no at either of my shows, dont like the commitee competing either whch from this year they wont be, as no matter how "Clean" you are always leaves a small amount of doubt for people, plus i book the judges !!!!!! Bt of a bugger as have ruled myself out of my own local county show !!!!! which before took over did very well at, and also wish someone would run a notts derby equivalant for me to compete at ...... as has such a variety of classes !!!!!
I have enough on running the shows to even contemplate competing !!!!!! Just My Opnion xx

Some shows have a separate judges selection committee - made up of members who don't show. This seems to work well - worth other shows considering perhaps?

We don't have anyone on our committee that doesn't show! And thats not for lack of trying! I guess if that were a rule there would just be no show! I suppose those that are for this rule also have a "thing" against sponsors too - or perhaps not

I know the show being referred to and if it provokes comments or poor feeling the organisers should be big enough not to take their animals to that show, particularly if they are involved in picking the judges. It's only one show after all. But I do understand if we excluded everyone one from showing who was involved in organising we wouldn't have many shows or competitors.

Personnally i don't think organisers should compete at their own shows.
I remember about 10 years ago my mum dragged all us kids (5 of us) half way across the country to a big show. My sister won a class and got into the championship only for the organisers to get Champion and reserve champion. So at 10pm at night we all set off home with a 3.5 hour journey back.
We never went back and would never go back to that show again.

Hiya, I've run my own riding club show for 7 years now with no committee. And I cope just fine. I pick the judges and I deal and do on the day. However, I have no problem with some young friends of mine taking my own ponies in the classes as its up to them to groom them and make sure they go well. And I have never had a complain about that. Also I have been to other shows when the secretary's daughters/ sons. granddaughter ect.. always wins (but alot do always have outstanding horse/ponies) and its up to the judge to place what turns up on the day. But as the organiser It would feel easy for me to compete in my own classes to qualify for XYZ. but as the spirit of the show intends I would rather go to another place to qualify and have fun!! I do like emma-janes opinion- have a kama. XX

It is extremely difficult to compete your own animals and run a show as you have to find other people to steward the classes that you want to go in . There is no enjoyment whatsoever for your child in competing because they have to do everything totally themselves as you are not availble to help. however, sometimes it means that the particular qualifier you want is clashing with your own show, so you have to take your own animals if your child wants to try to qualify. And if people think that when you organise a show you pick judges that suit your own animals, they are totally wrong. it is so difficult to get judges, that you would never ever ever turn down one that agrees to judge whether they love you or hate you! And I can honestly say that whatever judges we have had, they have never been bias towards my children or anyone else for that matter and judge what they see. If my children get through to a championship they rarely take part. We would much rather go to another show and spend the day having fun but they rarely run the range of qualifiers that you can pick up at our shows and as i have said, they often clash with us so we have no option.

Most of my committee compete at our show and we never have a problem. Sometimes our ponies do well, sometimes not just like everywhere else we go. I am disturbed that people really think that all show judges are not honest. If that is your opinion then I think show jumping would be a better alternative. Most judges in my experience (15 years of showing) judge what they see on the day. Of course there are one or two who are not in this category but we never invite them to judge and never show under them.

Should definately be a big no no.
How can organisers book the judges then compete. Obviously they arent going to book a judge that doesnt like their animals.
Should an organiser accept a qualification gained at their own show? Maybe PUK level but should they be accepting a RIHS qualification? I think not!!! But it does happen.

As i have stated before, you cannot pick and choose judges for shows, you must be grateful if someone/anyone is free to come and judge for you.
We try to only enter the qualifiers that have no entries or up to three so that if we are placed it does not take the qualifier away from anyone else. would not enter something like RIHS or Olympia quals at one of our shows.

I think if it is the decision of a FAIR judge then its not a problem however our local RC ran a prelim dressage for people who had never won a dressage comp before which was great until an organiser of the show won the dressage then changed the rules to not have won 3 dressage comps so she could do it agian! Wonder what will happen when she has won 3 times - time for another rule change maybe?!
